Western Pennsylvania was about as good and dense of an area as there was in the country for high school football talent up through the early 80's. About like Georgia or Louisiana is today. Pitt was merely a beneficiary living up to its potential (about like if UGA or LSU were to do so today) rather than some upstart in an area barren of talent (like Boise or someone like that).
It's a long time ago now, but Pitt could field a top 10 program and not have to go more than 2 hours from campus for their roster. Demographic changes, population flow, and all have changed the dynamics there a lot.

Philadelphia had hundreds and they were massive.You can see some abandon ones throughout the city.
Not the most aesthetically pleasing and they look like prisons more than anything.
Don't forget western PA and all those great players that area produced.

Pulling Pistol Pete out of W Pennsylvania was pretty sweet as well.
Sadly and remarkably at the same time, all the great NFL QBs like, George Blanda, Babe Parilli, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, and Joe Willie Namath never played for Penn State. Except for Marino, Pittsburg struck out too with all the great QBs going out of state.

But the mid 70's through mid 80's were a blip on the radar for Pitt.The school was bad to mediocre throughout the 40's,50's,60's and early 70's

GA and LSU have done a much better job of maxing out their potential and let's not forget schools like USC,UF,Miami,Texas,OU,etc have been the beneficiary of being surrounded by rich areas of HS talent.

You left out one of the most highly decorated,Johnny Lujack. Amazing resume:Heisman Trophy winner,3X National Champion,NFL All Pro.NFL passing AND rushing leader in the same year.
Also made millions post career in the auto business.Pretty much excelled at everything he did.

You're going to say garbage list and then put UFC on there. They've had recent success but in no way overachieve.
1) They're in one of the best recruiting states
2) They have the LARGEST population of any university in the country (72,000 students).

I’m going with Clemson. Three National Titles. When they won their first in 1981 their enrollment was 12k students. Still currently only a school of 25k students (point is way less alumni and $$$).
The university is located in a small/poor state. Look at what their competition South Carolina Gamecocks have accomplished historically with more resources.

People can say what they want, but there is no debating the fact Meyer at OSU raised the bar in the B1G.
UW has had better teams since those years listed, but just cannot beat the sheer quantity of talent OSU suits up yearly since Urb's arrival.

I went to K-State in the 80s. I graduated the year before Snyder arrived. In the four years I was at K-State I watched them lose at home to Austin Peay, Wichita St. (a year or two before WSU disbanded their football program), and twice to Northern Iowa. One of the Northern Iowa losses was a 17-0 shutout. The Wichita St. loss and the non-shutout Northern Iowa loss was in back to back games. In the four seasons I was there they had one player drafted in the NFL. And this was back when the draft was 12 rounds long. The words fail to describe how hopeless it felt to be a fan of K-State football back then.

Miami could be an overachiever. Sure, they are surrounded by amazing talent, but UM is still a private school with a small enrollment that has high educational values.
It’s strange. The school could sort of decide when they want to be good and hire a badass recruiter and allow inmates to run the asylum. Then, when shite hits the fan, they take a holier than thou approach and clean things up.
