Most overachieving college football programs

What schools, whether now or at some point in history, have overachieved in football based on their location, resources, etc?
1. Nebraska - crazy to think this was once a feared powerhouse program, in a state with zero football talent and nothing but cornfields and meth labs
2. Virginia Tech - They’ve been consistently good for about 30 years with occasional flashes of greatness. Pretty impressive for a school in the middle of nowhere without a lot of local talent
3. Boise State - they benefit from playing shite competition, but this is a former FCS school who has reached great heights without a ton of resources
4. Michigan - another school in a state with garbage football talent who has historically been very good. They’ve kind of fallen off in the last 10 years or so but I think they have the most CFB wins in history
5. TCU - Small private school who basically used to be on the same level as Tulane. They built a good football tradition and caught lightning in a bottle, parlaying their success into a Power 5 spot

Pretty decent list. I think Michigan's success has a lot to do with the talent in Ohio, plus the fact that their early success was due to being one of the first "big programs" in the midwest with a big stadium.

Wisconsin has been the most consistent program outside of Ohio State in the big 10 for the past ten years. It doesn’t matter the coach that program always wins 10 games. They always find good RBs, OLine, and LBs.

Northwestern has been good for 25 years now and I don’t know why.
Very selective private school playing in a conference with a shitload of ginormous public schools that throw unlimited money and resources to athletics.
You wouldn’t dream of Vanderbilt playing for conference titles.

Wisconsin is a good one. Their only downfall is they get owned by Ohio State but so does everyone in the Big 10

Helps that Madison is consistently lauded as the greatest college town in the country.

Michigan isn't a terrible state football talent wise. Some years are better than others but there is good talent that has come out.
I'd put NW and KSU. Both wildcats but with some amazing coaches in Snyder and Fitz.

Syracuse has overachieved historically. Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little. A national championship back in the day. A lot of program success in the '80s and '90s with Coach MacPherson and Pasqualoni. Donnie McNabb, Marvin, Freeney and company. We've regressed back to the mean the past couple of decades now and it's not been surprising to me. Syracuse is a dirty little shite city in the middle of Upstate NY cow country. NY state football is terrible so there's really no talent (or fan) base there. With the football landscape being what it is today, I'll be very surprised if they're ever competitive again.

Its obviously Oregon.
Dogshite talent in a low-pop mostly all-white State like Idaho buffeted by Washington and Cali schools and has to raid talent away from USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford and the Zona schools not to mention other National powers that raided California like Nebraska in the 90s.
Oregon has less prospects than Maine.
Oregon was dogshite for most of their history. It took massive marketing and Nike money to be competitive.

I would. Only nine teams have national championships in football and men's basketball. Syracuse is one of them.

They've been average to below average for a long while now. Yeah, they were good in the mid 90s for a bit but that's because they sold their soul for it.

BYU- Solid program since the early 80s. National championship in 1984.
Iowa- Several big 10 titles since the 80s.
Utah- undefeated season in 2004. Very competitive program.
