re: MLB veteran crew chief umpires average over 450k salary. Why not require they not be obese

Granted, it's a much different sport but in soccer the refs at the pro level have to pass a rigorous fitness test.
I think a lot of blown calls would go away if NFL and MLB umps were held to more rigorous physical standards

That dude is way over 215. He is, at least, 315.
That aside, maybe if they didn’t shift the SS and 2B so much the SS could have caught that.
It was 10 ft left of second base. That should have been the SS’s play.

Career Summary
By virtually every measure used within the umpiring profession, Bill Miller has had an elite career:
* 27+ years as an MLB umpire
* MLB Crew Chief
* 5 World Series
* 9 League Championship Series
* 11 Division Series
* 7 Wild Card assignments
* 2 All-Star Games
* Multiple World Baseball Classics
Yeah, a real disqualifier, you immature child.
So you give a bunch of career accolades that are based off of tenure and give literally zero measurables.
OK.

Has this ever happened with him before? Is this a one off? Something unfortunate happened. 1 time in the YEARS this guy has been calling games. And NOW the internet is calling him fat and obese insinuating he shouldn’t be out there. Do some of you rage baiting MFers just post things without looking past what’s not even skin deep? What a stupid, dumbass post. I’m getting more tired of the Internet more and more every day.
Solid post. I agree with every single point. The internets a disgusting place these days

They're all fat, so I thought that was a desirable trait in a baseball umpire.

Bill Miller is arguably the best ump in MLB RN and he's been excellent pretty much his entire career.
People just have to find something to be outraged over

The one measurable the OP gave was he’s fat.
Yeah, you’re right, that’s a sane argument.

It doesn’t really matter for the home plate umpire since he’s in foul territory anyway, but there should be some weight limit on the other umpires.

Yes, because MLB umpires run 10 miles a game like a top-tier FIFA referee.
You think the NFL doesn't have physical standards?
Do you have some numbers on those "blown calls" in the NFL that are somehow related to physical conditioning?

Ummmm, you know they rotate around the diamond every game right?
And what does foul territory have to do with anything? Where do you think the 1B umpire spends most of his time?

Pergaps, but I still think obesity should be a disqualifier
Not sure how old you are, but being a lardass was a basic requirement to be an ump in the 80's/90's.
Shockingly neither of these gents lived past 55 years old.

These are the god damn examples we have of umpires that are in shape.
Give me fat Joe West all day.

"F**king fatass. Get out of the way. Fat motherf**ker." Caleb Ferguson absolutely unleashed on umpire Bill Miller last, after Miller got in the way of a ground ball up the middle.
PeeWee from Porky's would have been all over it.

Ferguson has apologized.

Don't feel great about it for sure. Definitely pretty uncharacteristic for myself. As long as I have been in this game, I don't know if you will find a clip of me going at an umpire like that. Definitely going to have to wear that one on the chest.
"Going to seek Bill out, going to try to at some point. Definitely make it right with him 'cause very unprofessional on my part.
"Nothing you can do with it now, but just have to move on. I know Bill's doing his best to not be in his way in that situation, so I've got to be better on my part, too.

Angel Hernandez wasn’t fat, he must have been a great umpire.

People like to eat. Who knew?
How would you like it if someone came to your job at McDonalds and put you on probationary weight control?
