So keep an eye on the Houston Astros' pursuit of Mets ace Jacob deGrom between now and the July 31 deadline.

Here we are again needing an objective definition of an ace. Quintana has been a solid, consistent major league starter, but he doesn't come close to meeting my definition of an ace. CWS sure are trying to convince people that he is, though.

I'd pay for DeGrom. I hate losing tucker but it's worth it

Because he's much closer to being an ace than Quintana is.
Now I have to go mow grass.

he was top 10 in WAR over the last three full seasons, ahead of people like bumgarner
top 15 in fip, ahead of greinke and archer, 11th in fip- during the same time frame

DeGrom actually having a good season helps since the other two are struggling

Quintana isn't an ace. I'm comfortable making that declaration. He is however a consistent, innings eating, above average, cheaply controlled left handed pitcher. Which means he can't be had at a discount.

Going off what Boston gave up for Sale what I posted is probably close to fair, since Sale is a good bit better than DeGrom but DeGrom is cheaper. The Mets are probably less motivated to deal him than the White Sox were with Sale though

dont think the mets want to do anything to their rotation. no reason to really

quote:Plenty of reason... they are not a young team, their farm system is not very good, they have very little MLB prospects.
no reason to really
Now you wouldn't want to trade all of them but DeGrom being 29 and Harvey would be two I would reasonably move and get some players back who could turn into something.

degrom is their oldest at 29. they still have at least a three year window with the full rotation. theres no real reason to start selling it off when it can still be such a dominant part of your team going forward and when it has shown to be able to carry the mets over a full year
Posted on 7/12/17 at 12:26 pm to WestCoastAg
They're not good enough to do much over the next three years. Now if they pull Manny Machado and Bryce Harper things could change but by trading DeGrom they could speed up the process of rebuilding around Matz, Wheeler, Syndergaard, and Gsellman.
Especially the haul they could get for DeGrom with MLB ready prospects.

the organization just cant destroy their arms like they did this year

Their rotation is a shell of what it used to be. Thor and DeGrom are awesome but Harvey is a totally different pitcher and Matz might be permanently damaged.
Bruce and Walker are free agents after this year and Reyes and Granderson are old and not good. That's half their everyday lineup. They def need an infusion of young position player talent, outside Rosario and Smith it's pretty bleak

The shine is wearing off his star though
Fangraphs has him in the top 50 trade value for 2nd year in a row (based on projections, controllable years, talking with industry people, etc.) If Bregman was included in the deal, it would be a huge trade piece.
He's got 5 controllable years left and is at least an everyday starter, with potential for more.

im waiting until we get to see matz. if the worst we can say about their rotation is that harvey is no longer what he was in 2013 and 2015 then i think they are ok.
quote:and i dont disagree with that, but if i were the mets i would have no incentive to start dealing from that rotation right now this year when it has shown to be able to carry a not great lineup into the playoffs. id give it at least one more year

quote:2016 they had an actual good offense and 2015 their offense transformed once they obtained Cespedes.

Offensively right now they are atrocious and I doubt they get better with Walker, Granderson, Cespedes, Wright, Reyes, d'Arnaud... Confronto, Nimmo, and Flores are the only young players that they have contributing this year.
Plus health has been key and the year they went to the seies they only had 19 starts by someone outside of their starting 5.
