re: MLB to Expand to 32 Teams?

That article is so out of touch. Baseball's two biggest problems are length of games and aging fanbase, according to the article, which is something I probably agree with.
Manfred waxed poetic about how games have become so much longer than they used to be and yet he didn't even mention the single biggest reason why, and that's the amount and length of goddamn commercials. Also, it took to the end of the article to mention their other biggest issue, which is their fricktarded blackout policy and lack of streaming options.
ETA: Expanding is stupid. There is barely enough talent to fill 30 MLB rosters. 32 would water it down even more.

I got through about three paragraphs yesterday before I couldn’t continue. Manfred is an out of touch fricktard who does in fact hate baseball IMO
There is zero reason to expand except that it will make owners money, so they will likely do it. It will make the product worse without a doubt

You have the Braves with their closest opponents in the NL being Washington and Miami.
Fun geography fact: the closest team in MLB to the Braves isn't Miami, Washington, or Tampa. It's Cincinnati.

I would cum buckets if Louisville got a team but I seriously doubt it happens

cant imagine Astros and Rangers will allow Austin
Shouldn’t be an issue if Austin is National League and the other two are American League

US/Cuba issues will prevent this.

Along with San Juan, this would be the best option.

Way, way, way, way too far away. That would be a logistical nightmare. Also, the Wilson Ramos incident will probably prevent this from happening for awhile.

The question is where?
Oakland is moving to Vegas.
Portland (AL) and Nashville (NL) will get the two new teams. They want them already.
Tampa stays put and eventually puts up a new stadium in Ybor City. They move to the NL and Colorado moves to the AL.
AL East: Boston, NYY, Toronto, Baltimore
AL North: Minnesota, Chicago Sox, Tigers, Indians
AL Central: Houston, Kansas City, Arlington, Colorado
AL West: LAA, Vegas, Seattle, Portland
NL East: Mets, Phillies, Washington, Pittsburgh
NL South: Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, Nashville
NL Central: St. Louis, Cincy, Chi Cubs, Milwaukee
NL West: LAD, San Francisco, San Diego, Arizona
The divisions might need some tweaking, but at least all teams are within one time zone of the rest of their division.

San Juan could definitely work
It would be the team for the entire carribean

Nashville and Charlotte make the most sense.
Charlotte's Knights AAA team have perennially had the best attendance in minor league ball. The metro area is about to overtake St. Louis and Baltimore in population total.
Nashville would put asses in seats due to the tourism.

How many threads do we need to have for people to understand attendance is not what drives whether or not a market is a disaster or not? Baseball is not abandoning Florida anytime soon. It’s the third largest state that sees 1,000 people relocate there every day for the last 20 years. Miami and Tampa actually have good local tv ratings.

People in Venezuela And the DR love baseball though so MLB is gonna chase those big corporate dollars in Caracas and Santo Domingo. The suites will be filled out every year

How many expansion teams have Austin and SA gotten in the last 30 years?
Not too many major cities have doubled in population in the last 30 years —> Austin + San Antonio is now 5.5MM plus population - any others on the list approaching 5MM?

I mean, teams move to smaller markets in US pro sports. The Oilers moved to Nashville. The Sonics moved to OKC.
Either way, MLB should figure out Tampa and Oakland before adding teams.

I wonder how much the lack of competition helped those decisions. It's easier to pull in fans when you're the only major pro sport in town.

That's not true in itself. Growing the game and being able as a franchise to pay your best players is a lot about sustainability and long-term fan excitement. Tampa reminds me a lot of what ails the Oakland A's. They too play in a dump and regardless of their best efforts by "the" Billy Bean they are always selling and will always be selling their best assets regardless of moderate success. Tampa plays in a tin can and the stadium isn't close to being in the right place for convenient fan access. Ask Atlanta how important that is?
You can point out a few outliers, and the Rays are overachieving on the field as we speak, but is it any more sustainable than Oakland? The reality in recent seasons is that teams in the top third of MLB in payroll have reached the postseason at a rate slightly above 50 percent. Teams in the middle third are a little above 30 percent. Teams in the bottom third — and this would be the neighborhood where the Rays reside — are closer to 15 percent.
You can say none of this matters but it was the owner of the Rays who last year proposed to MLB that they play half their games in Tampa and half in Montreal. What's the owner of the Rays saying about long-term viability?

That was probably just a bluff to try to get funding for a new stadium.

Why would any ownership group or city get involved with MLB expansion when it's far cheaper to get a Baltimore or Oakland to relocate?
