Ben McDonald?

McDonald had a respectable career, his 20 career WAR is above average for # 1 picks.

Yeah but the thread is about matching hype and Ben McDonald's hype was huge...huge...

29-4 collegiate record and gold medal:

"This is my 28th year around this game," LSU coach Skip Bertman said two weeks before the 1989 draft, "and at this juncture, he's better than [Roger] Clemens, [Frank] Viola, Greg Swindell, any of those guys. None of those guys had the control this guy has. He has also handled adversity. If he gets lit up and 11 minicams come around, he can handle that. He knows the ways of the world."

MLB: 78-70 record and a 3.91 ERA.

Didn't Matt Anderson have some sort of freak injury? Looking back on it, it seems silly to draft a reliever with the top pick in the draft anyway, even if he threw 100.

ETA:

Earlier the same day he had participated in a Tigers-sponsored fan octopus-throwing contest along with Jeff Weaver, leading to the perception (though disputed by Anderson) that he'd torn the muscle in hopes of winning Detroit Red Wings playoff tickets.

Damn that's fricked up.

Todd Van Poppel. I was so excited about that dude as a young A's fan in the Bay Area.

Yeah, that's precisely why I included him. He certainly wasn't horrible at the MLB level, but didn't live up to the hype either.

Speaking of the Cubs, Kerry Wood could be on this list.

Then again, in the state semis his senior year, his coach let him throw over 150 pitches. Any wonder he had injury problems his entire career?

Drew had a very underrated career. He had trouble staying healthy, but he was a much better player than people give him credit for.

Donavan Tate

He had as much hype as Beckham in a stronger (at least at the top) draft class. He's been awful his entire minor league career and didn't show up to minor league camp this spring and hasn't played any minor league games this year.
