Just about to say Ackley
I was thinking about mentioning Ackley too, but he just turned 25 this year, so he's still young. He got sent down a few weeks ago and is tearing it up in AAA, hitting over .400, so hopefully he gets things figured out. It's the first time he's been dropped down.

No shite. Some of these answers are laughable.
Prior
Wood
Pat the bat
Gordon
They literally could have picked a hundred guys who were hyped and never made it to the show. Yet, they selected all-stars.

even Bush doesn't really count because he wasn't hyped at all. He wasn't considered a great player, just someone good who was signable

Matt Bush was a horrible pick, but I don't think he ever had much hype compared to most top picks. The Padres went cheap and drafted a player that was easy to sign. Same case with 2002 top pick Bryan Bullington.

A little over 60 percent of first rounders make it to the big leagues—that’s a little more than half. We aren’t even talking about being an impact player, we are talking about playing in a major league game. And after that first round, the percentages slowly dip as you get deeper into every draft.
So if 30 players (avg) are drafted in the first round, 12 of them probably won't make the Bigs. Looks like this thread could go on for quite a while.

Wasn't Brad Komminsk supposedly the next big deal for Braves and floundered
Komminsk was nicknamed "The Phenom" before he ever played a major league game.

That's ridiculous that Jeter was drafted in 1992

and the Rangers in the 90's had some Hispanic OF whose name began with an M who was hyped as the next coming for about 3 years while he was in the minors but never did anything
Ruben Mateo. I think an injury did him in.
Alex Escobar was another UDFA from that time period who got tons of hype.

There are some ridiculous answers in here
Yeah, a lot of really good players named.

Let's talk about some real stinkers, just from the 90s drafts:
Paul Wilson
No. 1 overall, part of "Generation K" and one of a litany of "Mets saviors" that never did shite. He debuted at 23, sucked, stayed in the minors until '99, got hurt, then got traded to Tampa where he proceeded to suck some more.
B.J. Wallace
3rd overall in 1992 (2 slots ahead of Jeter), Wallace was thought to be a foundational rotation piece for Montreal. He set an Olympic record for Ks in one game. Never pitched an inning in the big show.
Mike Kelly
2nd overall in '91. 6'4, toolsy and outright bad at professional baseball. He was a college stud, though.

I think Corey Patterson was the one ufowns was talking about. Pulsipher is another one..he had a cannon but had so many arm issues.

Can't believe no Astros fans are throwing out Brett Wallace.
