The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly emerged as an early favorite to land reigning MLB home run champion Giancarlo Stanton in a trade from the Miami Marlins.

On Thursday, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports noted the Cardinals are a "prime player" in the Stanton sweepstakes along with the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies. He added the Marlins would "most like" to make a deal with the Cards due to their numerous top-tier pitching prospects.

I would think St Louis moves pretty quickly on it if they're gonna do it so they know whether they need to pursue a big FA bat or not

That just doesn't seem like a Cardinals move. Seems pretty out of character for the way they've run things in recent years. Trading for Ozuna would seem to make more sense IMO.

I agree. But substitute Yellich for Ozuna.

From Derrick Goold's chat the other day, the Cardinals are prepared to move a top pitching prospect like Weaver or Flaherty. I don't remember if he mentioned Reyes. I know he said they would prefer to hold onto Jordan Hicks.

Yes and NO

They always made deals for Star players. Edmonds,Mcgwire,Rolen,Walker, etc

But back then, there wasnt the big revenue sharing, so you could steal players from teams who were lower revenue or retooling and had mediocre GM's.

I am so down though. All depends on how much Miami eats.

Been awhile since we've had a Pujols type middle of the order masher.

Competitive Balance Tax Payors: Tigers, Dodgers, Yankees, Giants, Nationals

If one of these teams signs a qualified free agent, it must forfeit its second-highest and fifth-highest pick in the 2018 draft. The team will also have its international signing bonus pool reduced by $1MM.

Non-Disqualified Revenue Sharing Payees: Diamondbacks, Braves, Orioles, Reds, Indians, Rockies, Astros, Royals, Marlins, Brewers, Twins, Athletics, Pirates, Padres, Mariners, Rays

These 16 teams received revenue sharing and did not exceed the competitive balance tax. If one of these teams signs a qualified free agent, it forfeits its third-highest pick. These teams face the smallest draft pick penalty.

All Other Clubs: Red Sox, Cubs, White Sox, Angels, Mets, Phillies, Cardinals, Rangers, Blue Jays

These nine remaining teams would forfeit their second-highest pick and and have their international signing bonus pool reduced by $500K. The penalty is something of a middle ground, but it would sting for a team like the Phillies to sacrifice a pick in the 30s.

They're supposed to be building a new one in Oakland.

I heard that and then I heard that deal was off.

When the Raiders move to Vegas, they can renovate the one they have. Dump Mount Davis and everything in the outfield, move the bullpens there. I'm OK with leaving the massive foul territory--every park has its quirks and Oakland should have its too.

BDW has put himself in an awkward position, Fans, and not just the small minority of, are starting to call him out for being cheap.

It's the loudest it's ever been.

And with this new tv deal coming in(100mil per), and the fact they print money, he's going to have to make the big move.

Yankees will not be signing anyone with a qualifying offer, they've worked hard adding to their international pool to sacrifice losing 1 million

The Cards are desperate as they have no A level hitter. They have a few B guys but mostly C level hitters with none on the horizon in the pipeline either

Compare it to most of the teams in the playoffs that have 2 and sometimes 3 mvp caliber hitters & they are far behind

And we grow top tier pitching prospects on local trees, so it works out.

We can trade for Stanton and still be well set with high quality young arms. Nice luxury to have.

Probably why this has legs and may happen, we have want Miami wants. All comes down to the money they eat.

dodgers are lucky that this year is a weak FA class. probably not going to to do anything major while they try to get under the threshold for harper next year

Reyes, Weaver, Alcantara, Hudson, Flaherty, Fernandez....

Trade away 2 of those, still leaves a lot of damn good young arms. Like I said, we grow them on trees.

And no one really on the STL side wants Lynn back.

Alcantara is very close. But yeah, not too much of an issue going forward, we have plenty. All are relatively close right now.

O it is. Mo said in a interview that he hears what the fans are saying, and he understands the frustration from the fans for not making any big moves.

He's not great but at least with him & CMart you have two SP2's.

Now you have an SP2 and a few SP3-4's depending on what FA'cy brings
