MJ in the 90’s basketball to baseball would it be that big of a deal in today’s world?

I remember how many people were shocked and saddened by Michael Jordan abruptly leaving the NBA to pursue baseball.

If a star in today’s world were to leave their respective sport to pursue another, would it be that big of a deal given today’s social media landscape and 24/7 news outlets?

You serious? Look what the media did with Travis Hunter at Colorado. Framed him like he was the Michael Jordan of football

Social media and the current news media turn everything up to 10 so yes it would be massive sports news story with constant updates/coverage

Well, with social media today, it would be more widely known that he did it due to being forced out of the NBA because of his gambling habits.

*Allegedly.

In today's age of social media, Jordan being secretly suspended a season for gambling and being able to use the excuse that he was going to try baseball would never fly.

Wait what's that media, Ohtani's interpreter was the one with the gambling problem and Shohei knew nothing about it?

Nevermind it would probably still get buried because the "journalists" don't want to have their access cut off.

There is no one currently playing in the NBA today that is comparable to Jordan. He was the best player in the league in the prime of his career when he left to play baseball.

Yes, it was a big deal when Tebow played minor league ball about 10 years ago

I’d just like to use this thread as an opportunity to say how people have the complete backwards perspective on MJ’s baseball career.

They look at it as a failure and rag on him hitting .200.

I think it’s actually incredible. He played AA professional baseball. AA is where all the stud prospects are cutting their teeth. It’s serious professional baseball. To go from not having played since he was a kid to hitting .200 against some serious ball players is incredibly impressive. Truly.

People don’t give it the credit it deserves.

Also, he was improving. After the season he played in the Arizona fall league, where top prospects play, and hit .252.

The money is too big for that nonsense now, he would lose 40/50 million in NBA cash if took a year off

MJ was also way older than most AA baseball prospects

He would have been banned for life from the NBA today for gambling.

No interpreter to blame.

i know this is a super common theory but it doesn’t hold water.

1. he was gone for 157 games. Which is a weird suspension length

2. If he was so important that they had to hide he was suspended him for gambling then he would be inportant enough to just not suspend at all.

this. MJ racked up huge gambling debts against the mob, he refused to pay thinking “hey I’m Michael Jordan. I ain’t paying anything, “ , the mob knew they couldn’t kill MJ , that’s the golden goose. so they killed the next thing they could, his dad . Jordan got the message (paid his debts) , The NBA got the message (suspended MJ) ; and life moved forward quietly . I just don’t think that could happen again today.

Because back when people had sense we knew they were defamatory rumors and nothing more. They’ve only become popular since the Lebron cucks decided their guy can’t surpass him so they need to tear him down.

Is this a serious question? Like if lebron (10 years ago) quit to play for the zephyrs or ohtani joined the dolphins you don't think it'd be a gigantic deal?

It would be a big deal, but to what I think the point is here is that these days we are so occupied with other things it would probably fade a bit pretty quickly. Back then we didn’t have all this stuff to occupy our time so stars like Jordan were huge.

Yes. Exactly my point.
