Gundy, talking about the 2011 team that is returning this weekend, said (not for the first time!) that he believes that team — had it gotten a chance — would have defeated LSU and won the BCS Championship.
quote:

“I still think we were the best team in the country,” he said. “We would have played, I guess, LSU. At that time LSU was scoring maybe 20 points a game and was happy with it. There’s not anyone that could have kept us from scoring 25 or 30 points. I just don’t see it happening.”
quote:

“They were an overload-the-box, man-to-man team on defense, and you could not play our team in man that year,” he added. “We were too good. That still bothers me, that we didn’t get a shot. And if the system was set up like it is now, we would have been in the playoff. I guess those things don’t drive me as much. I love for our kids to have success, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t dwell on it like I used to.”

In my opinion Gundy got lucky he got to barely scrape by Stanford instead of getting embarrassed by LSU. LSU played a terrible first half in the SECCG and still won 42-10, the Pokes would have gotten steamrolled. Anyone agree with Gundy?

LSU's last 5 games before the national championship they averaged 37.2 points per game. The only games they were held below 35 points that season were Miss St (19) and Alabama (9 and 0). Every other game was 35+.

Oregon - 40
Northwestern St - 49
MSU - 19
WVU - 47
UK - 35
UF - 41
UT - 38
Auburn - 45
Bama - 9
WKU - 42
Ole Miss - 52
Arkansas - 41
UGA - 42

We certainly strugged with Bama, but in his hypo the 21-0 Bama NC doesnt happen because we are playing Oklahoma State.

He may need to have his memory checked.

Taking the cupcakes out of it...
40 against #3 Oregon
19 against #25 Miss State
47 against #16 West Virginia
35 against Kentucky
41 against #17 Florida
38 against Tennessee
45 against #19 Auburn
9 against #2 Alabama
52 against Ole Miss
41 against #3 Arkansas
42 against #12 Georgia

I mean, yeah we only scored 19 against Mississippi State, and then you have the famous 9-6 game, but otherwise we were steamrolling people that season. His argument is bunk from the start.

They would have been lucky to score 10.

I reckon it would have gone like every SEC vs. Big 12 Semifinal/NCG this century

The worst break any college football team has ever suffered. Has any other team ever lost out on a pretty much guaranteed national title because of a 28-point upset in a game they didn't even play in?

If y’all played the way you played against Bama, he’s absolutely right. Y’all remind me a lot of that 2014 Florida State team that was holding on by a thread all season and got whooped in the playoffs

How? LSU blew past everyone they faced that year while FSU had to catch some lucky breaks. We just got unlucky because you don’t beat Saban twice, especially with Les “attack their strength” Miles as the coach.

He lost to Iowa St and barely beat Stanford.

Only team beating LSU that season was equally talented Bama in a second match coached up by Saban.

That LSU team beats anyone else that season.
