One thing Kiffin (and Leach) did that I loved was they made the Egg Bowl not toxic as frick. It was still intense and both fanbases wanted to win but it wasn’t the end all be all for everyone like it was when Mullen/Freeze were at the helm

His attitude will change if Ryan Day spanks his arse this year and he has boosters down his throat.

Whittingham is a real coach. He’s not a meat head like Michigan has been used to. He wants to win because that’s what he’s paid to do. He’s not paid to get caught up in middle school hysteria.

It’s all about playoffs now. All rivals games are only extra significant to a team who Will miss the playoffs. But if you celebrate to much that rival might win the national title anyway

Never got hate for a rival. I dislike the crimson team in my state. Growing up on Fridays we'd wear our teams shirts or jerseys on Friday. Auburn always a monirity but other fans started fights etc. We all know the despicable acts the adults have done. Not worth hate. My wife was flabbergasted to find out you can't wear burnt orange/navy blue in some areas here.

I can't be the only one that thinks this guy is a bad fit at Michigan, right?

That’s too bad, Michigan vs OSU was one of the last vestiges of good old fashioned straight up toxic hate in American sports. Everyone is too buddy-buddy these days you don’t see much legit hatred anymore.

Not really. It's a different lens from a fan's perspective, but pretty normal for coaches of "rival" teams to be friends. The Woody Hayes era of "coach rival hate" has long gone.

I was very surprised he went from Utah to Michigan. But a Utah team is not much different philosophically from a Michigan team. Trench heavy, stout run game, discipline over individual skill. That said, Whittingham knows real rivalry. BYU vs Utah is one of the most visceral rivalries, just not overly known about since no one pays attention to the state of Utah. But those coaches are essentially not allowed to say anything that could be deemed inflammatory due to the state's LDS dominance. Whittingham is aware of OSU and UM's mutual hatred, he is just not used to being able to be frank about it.

I belong to an osu insider pod

And they stated when Whitt said this at media days, Michigan beat reporters were lookin at each baffled, like wtf, dude.

That said, if he wins the game, none of this matters. If he loses, this is ammo for his critics.

he might have been the right fit when the game was played with chad henne, hart, and mario manningham type players but the game and the wild lands are so different he seems a fish out of water but who knows
