You’ll have to settle for Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns

It is a shame that high school wrestling isn't bigger. Negligible equipment costs, minimal space requirements, and as about as all-inclusive as a sport can be.

HS wrestling is pretty popular in the midwest but I think the lack of money to be made post-HS puts a cap on how big it can be nationally. The Olympics are cool but if you are a top athlete why would you focus on wrestling when you can potentially make millions in other sports? I recall that a few years ago there was an attempt to start a professional freestyle wrestling league but I think it fizzled out pretty quick.

spent most of my life in Louisiana. But I went to High School in Fairfax County Va. (suburb or Washington DC). Wrestling is Hugh in that area. A lot of time its the 3rd largest sport in school. Wrestlers play Football and Baseball. Louisiana should push this sport in every school. This will do nothing but help the Football and Baseball Teams. The physical workouts the wrestling team does is unbelievable.

Jesuit and brother Martin are big wrestling schools in New Orleans, have been some I was in high school in the early 80s.
LSU losing their wrestling program in the 80s didn't help things in Louisiana

The two most famous Olympic wrestlers are guys who went/going to pro wrestling Kurt Angle and Gabe Stevenson.

There are tons of pro wrestlers who wrestled in college, Brock Lesnar among them.

So there is money, more money in fact than to be in Greco Roman wrestling or freestyle,
Which would be a miserable life cutting weight all the time.

Don’t forget about wrestling being a springboard into MMA

Joe Rogan talks about college wrestlers transitioning to MMA and says they are the most mentally tough sons of bitches he’s ever come across. Just tough, typically quiet, brutal human beings.

He had on a very accomplished wrestler from NJ I believe that’s been to the Olympics before and says when he went to Iran he was an absolute mega star.

I went to High School in Fairfax. My freshman year, first year wrestling the coach told me he got me a spot in the varsity tournament but I had to wrestle up a weight class. My first match was against a kid from Jesuit who traveled up to DC for this tournament. The kid looked huge to me but I decided I was going to shoot right off the whistle He caught me and put me on my back, winning the match and the fastest pin of the tournament.

While I don’t think they are making millions there is money to made in wrestling. The wrestlers training for the Olympics now have Regional Training Centers and some programs like Penn State’s RTC can bring in $6 million annually to train and pay the senior wrestlers. The college benefits by having the college wrestlers practice with the pros. There are also a lot more endorsement opportunities and a lot of athletes are capitalizing on this.

Because they love wrestling and don't want to have to literally fight for a living in MMA. Most wrestlers are too small for the NFL so that's usually not an option.

Wrestling's not a bad gig because there are a lot of opportunities to become a coach. You won't make millions but you'll keep your brain intact.

I wrestled at Fontainebleau back in 2005. It makes me proud to see them in the top 10. I follow their Facebook page and it seems like they’ve got a lot of great wrestlers on that team.

Former state champ for Bro Martin in the early 2000’s here. The sport actually seems to be more popular than when I was in high school and I attribute it to kids’ clubs. My sons are checking it out before middle school and I see tons of young kids into it. It’s grueling, so I’m sure most won’t see it through until high school but I think it can only help them with other sports as it develops coordination, toughness, etc.
