The Franklinton/Salmen semifinal game the previous year in a damn near blizzard was wild. Was also like 60-0

I’ll add a story for nostalgia for high school football

My dad reffed a game of Broadmoor vs Tara when Billy Cannon Jr played

He said when Billy Jr took the opening kickoff he sounded like a fricking horse running. Grunting and shite as he nailed people. He said by the 3rd quarter nobody on Tara wanted anything to do with trying to tackle him. Best high school football player he said he ever saw period and he reffed a lot of games

ETA: It might have been that 1980 game referenced above . My dad still loves to tell that story. He said he never once saw someone run so damn hard at other people

I'm assuming your dad has retired. Any idea what year he hung it up? I wonder if I may have known him.

Yes, Redemptorist at west lake in the semis was a great game, but near the end of the game it got a little testy. Wolves were running out the clock and I believe #53 for west lake took offense and came across the line in between plays and punched or shoved one of the wolves. Things got a little heated for a while, there.
QB for Westlake, Zeke Dixon, was really good. Great arm. Saw him play for SFA against Northwester State a couple years later.

Video link below starts with 1:59 remaining and Bonnabel up 20-14

SL

I was at this game as a kid. When I saw the thread title, I remembered this video that was uploaded 5 years ago by Tommy Wilcox.

Um…
Might want to tell Cantral and Zachary that.

And that’s not counting Madison Prep winning 3A non-select.

I remember WM playing Midland Lee. Side note: great to see some West Texans reverting back to the good ol’ days with that name change.

Lee won 3 straight 5A titles on the legs of Cedric Benson. I wanna say they lost 3 games during that span. I know one of them was an asskicking at the hands of West Monroe. I’m not able to find much on the games outside of the YT video. I believe they played two years in a row, no idea where, as a home and home would have been an extremely long trek.

Midland Lee has been in the same district as Odessa Permian for years. Unfortunately, the big classes (5A and 6A) are dominated by the DFW area and a couple of Houston schools. Lee and Permian will hit a wall around round 3 or so (at best), and that’s it.

I know Longview, TX has played its share of Louisiana schools. I think WM and Evangel and a couple others. I also remember there being a playoff game with Longview played at Independence Stadium. I always thought that was kind of odd.

That was actually the "off" year of '00 after Berlin graduated and JD Booty was only a freshman. They lost a lot of players from that 99 National Championship squad, but they were still Evangel. And this would be the only year Brent Rawls would be the starting QB. Brent Rawls, who Bob Stoops once said, "if he could have kept his nose clean and matured, nobody would have ever even heard of Jason White. Rawls was supposed to come in after Huepel and the natty and be the man from day 1. Unfortunately, he's retarted and threw it all away by doing some dumb shite. Reminds me of Johnny Manziel without the fame and the Heisman. Same story though. Rawls just fricked it all up before he had his chance to win the Heisman and lose back to back National Championship games to LSU and USC.

I thought WM whooped them in West Monroe the first year, and then they never traveled to Texas for the return game
