Louisiana High School football nostalgia

The state of public school football in Baton Rouge is absolutely pathetic. It has been impossible to win at Belaire, Broadmoor, Tara, Capitol, or Northeast for 3 decades. Istrouma was doing OK with Mayor Sid, and McKinley has a hell of a coach and has risen to where they can beat the teams listed above, but nobody else.

This makes me sad because one of the greatest high school events I have ever been to was a Broadmoor-Tara game in 1980. Both teams were 9-0 and there were over 20,000 people at Memorial Stadium. It seemed to be a great natural rivalry--divided by Airline Highway near mid city. 9-year old me was in awe of the whole thing. The game ended up being a blowout. Broadmoor built a huge lead, Tara got some late garbage scores, and the game ended like 42-27.

A couple years and one a-hole judge's desegregation order later, and all of this was gone for good.

What’s the deal with the Collegiate High program? I think they didn’t score last season and gave up like 300+ points against not exactly a murderers row?

I can't keep up with all the random crappy charter schools anymore. Madison Prep is the only one who has legit sports teams in the BR area.

My uncle team at Carroll beat West Monroe in 93 their first year winning state…

Yeah that was a head scratcher game. Carrol won that game 26-21

93 WM beat some impressive teams. Haynesville, Neville, St Aug, Carencro, Destrehan.

St Aug looked like an NFL team. Those guys were giants, and that was one of their best teams. WM won that game in OT on a failed 2 point conversion by St Aug.

Rondel Mealy was a man among boys. That guy was a hoss. WM pretty much shut him down.

For me, when Chalmette High had Norris Weese and Stanley Moley in the backfield in the late 60's.

Yeah you’re old

For me, it’s this years Chalmette team that reminds me of a Blue Bell commercial “The good ole days are being made right now”

So, are you saying the Owls are going to have a pretty good team this year?

If so, I'll need to head down to Nuss Stadium and take in a few of the home games.

I know the band will be there, but I know they won't be playing "Dixie" even once when in my day they played it at least 3-4 times a night, along with some of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass hit songs of the time:

"The Lonely Bull" "A Taste of Honey" are 2 that I can distinctly remember. "The Lonely Bull" was always a crowd favorite.

A.J., the female counterpart of the parishes high school system would have their "Charmer" squad at every game, along with the cheerleaders along the sidelines. Between the band and the Charmers, they'd put on a pretty good halftime show.

Probably been about 5 years since I've attended a home game there. The wife and I stopped at Rocky & Carlo's for a bite to eat and went to the game but left mid 4th quarter to avoid the traffic as the Owls were well behind in that game.

10 y/o me was at that game as well. Remember the massive crowd but no game details. Believe Billy Cannon Jr was part of reason for big draw.

It truly was magical how that tiny 1A school in Shreveport somehow had a football team with 80+ players who were bigger and/or faster than everyone they played, 5A powerhouses included.

They were absolutely loaded- some of the best athletes from the arklatex area combined to one team. Part of the reason the playoff split occurred unfortunately

2004 Lucas Taylor of Carencro goes for 539 with 6 TD on 35 carries (15.4 ypc) in an 11 point loss to Barbe 53-42.

Not super nostalgic though it’s been over 10 years already, but I remember watching 2014 St Thomas More choke away a 43-17 3rd quarter lead and give up 36 unanswered to Teurlings Catholic.

Also remember the 2010 Acadiana-STM semifinal rematch where they got blanked 31-0 by “27 seed” Acadiana

I’ll add a story for nostalgia for high school football

My dad reffed a game of Broadmoor vs Tara when Billy Cannon Jr played

He said when Billy Jr took the opening kickoff he sounded like a fricking horse running. Grunting and shite as he nailed people. He said by the 3rd quarter nobody on Tara wanted anything to do with trying to tackle him. Best high school football player he said he ever saw period and he reffed a lot of games

ETA: It might have been that 1980 game referenced above . My dad still loves to tell that story. He said he never once saw someone run so damn hard at other people

Junior graduated in 1979, so he was already gone.

I have scoured the internet but can't find anything about that game. May have to go to the Advocate archives one day to find the game story.
