Integration
SMU scandal
Illegal Drugs
Steroids
Notre Dame
Divisions and conference championships
Schools switching conferences
AP writers deciding national championships
Bowl Coalition
Bowl Alliance
Super Alliance
BCS
Super BCS
BCS Championship
ESPN
The SEC
The Big Ten
Nick Saban
No playoff
4 team playoff
12 team playoff
Transfer portal
NIL
House settlement
The NCAA
Congress getting involved in the sport
Congress not getting involved in the sport
Now it's the 24-team playoff. Guaranteed to kill college football. No, trust us this time. This one will. Forget all the other stuff we said would do it.
Sorry if I'm not waiting for the grim reaper to descend upon the sport.

I think 24 is dumb
But it absolutely wont kill football
It makes the regular season less meaningful but just making the playoffs is a reasonable and realistic goal for all P4 teams with a respectable NIL budget

NIL did hurt it badly.
24 team playoff would make it a joke to most and apathy would set in.

Never understand this type of argument. McDonald's and Wal-Mart aren't going away either. It's still fair to point out that an entity is clearly offering a shittier product at a higher price, just because they can.
That's basically what all sports are doing, and pointing to high TV ratings doesn't make the criticisms invalid.

It’s already dead. It’s a pro league that’s going to be purchased and officially turned within a few years.

A 24 team playoff will be a travesty it's a 13 game season and now teams that lose 4 of those games (and having 2 rent a wins) will get in the playoffs

Those two things were designed to break it so that it could be purchased.

It’s a cash grab by the NCAA before the sport is taken away from them. Juice as many fanbases as you can for a short term bump.

People are nostalgic for the way it used to be and reject change, shocking. As older people die off, younger people who know no other form of college football will fill their spot and say that the next thing will destroy college football. And the cycle continues for eternity while the schools rake in more and more money.

College football is a money printing machine for TV , the universities , the administrators , and coaches. It is not going anywhere for the next 10+ years.
However, the rapacious greed of the aforementioned cabal is what is destroying college athletics as we know it.

as a 7 year old ball boy and first year football player in 1972... the early days of integration made for some interesting times. Heck in our parish football league the playgrounds were not yet integrated - all white teams played all black teams for the first time in fall of 73.
I will always remember roaming on Fortier's side of the field in 72 and a bunch of their newer players had no clue what a Tarpon was
.
Miami may have deserved death penalty as well TBH.
The NIL and portal are IMO ruining bigtime college sports.

I don't think anybody actually said one of these actions would kill college football completely.
I think what they were saying is these actions would kill college football as we know it
change the sport forever, end up making it where only big teams can compete change the game forever.
I don't think anyone ever actually said this action or that action would be the ruination and ending of college football completely
too much money in it to kill it outright

no one thing will "kill" the sport.
but, these things
quote:
12 team playoff
Transfer portal
NIL
Congress getting involved in the sport
Now it's the 24-team playoff
have made me increasingly less interested in the sport as a whole and I'm nowhere near as invested in the season as I once was.

Interesting this is posted around the same time as the “what happened to boxing” thread. When Ali-Frazier drew 300 million viewers worldwide, I’m sure people thought boxing was invincible too. Never underestimate the impact greed can have on entertainment, it can drastically kill anything if given time.

I think 24 has the potential to be incredibly awesome, but only if they do it right. Play games on campus up until at least the semifinals and stop spreading the games out so much.
The NFL has such a great playoff structure because it’s a bunch of packed home stadiums and it’s every week.

I'm with you, why watch the regular season with that? It'll be mostly the same teams every year and the regular season will mean next to nothing any longer.
The group of 5 should do their own thing, maybe that'll be more interesting.

I mean, that’s kinda how life goes. In general, change is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean it’s always good. There are some unintended consequences with everything. Example: technology.

And? They’re doing it for the money. Terrific. They aren’t motivated by a better product, just cash.
