Harold Baines also got in which just boggles my mind. I’m an Orioles fan and saw him play a bunch and never once thought about him as a HOF player. He also never even came close to being voted in by the writers and fell off the ballot completely in his fifth year. Very bizarre selection by the Veterans Committee.

I don't understand the Harold Baines choice???

Much better players who are still sitting out.

HOF is becoming the Hall of Fame and Good players

both are questionable, but Smith is far more questionable than Baines.
But I loved both players when they played so I happy both got in.

WTH? Harold Baines is going into the HoF? Baines was a good player with a long career but I never once heard his name as a serious HoF selection.

I have always appreciated the baseball Hall the most since it seems the most exclusive. The Baines pick is shocking.

Lee Smith was born in Jamestown, Louisiana, and raised in the small town of Castor in Bienville Parish. Buck O'Neil claimed credit for having scouted him. At age 17, partly on O'Neil's recommendation, Smith was drafted in the second round as the 28th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs in the 1975 draft.[3][4] Smith began his professional career as a starting pitcher. In 1978 with the Class AA minor league Midland Cubs, Smith struggled as a starter with an ERA near 6.00, prompting manager Randy Hundley to move him to the bullpen. Smith resisted the move and briefly tried college basketball at Northwestern State University. At the behest of former Cubs outfielder Billy Williams, Smith returned to Midland as a reliever for the 1979 season[2] and pitched well enough to earn a promotion to Class AAA baseball for 1980. With the major league Chicago Cubs struggling to a last-place finish, Smith came into the big leagues as a September call-up that season.

I used to love watching him pitch on the Superstation WGN Chicago in the early days of cable TV.

No way in hell Smith is more questionable than Baines. His numbers falls solidly in the middle among the seven relievers inducted into the HOF while Baines is one of the five worst selections ever. If you put in Baines, how can you not put in Dave Parker or Dwight Evans or Tony Oliva or Darryl Strawberry or a plethora of other guys who were more better players than Baines ever was?

LOL. Ridiculous, and if you are honest, probably a biased opinion.

Lee Smith is the late 20th century barometer for a HOFer. He was great, but limited.

Much like Edgar Martinez.

Ken Rosenthal Verified account @Ken_Rosenthal

Important: Smith and Baines were elected not by @officialBBWAA, but the Today’s Game Era committee, a Veterans Committee. Neither received necessary 75 percent of vote from the writers.

Now it makes sense.

Really enjoyed watching him compete on WGN when I was growing up and getting into baseball. He could throw heat on the bump and came right at hitters. Solid HOF selection.
