Harold!
I can't believe he got in either.

Baines never had the kind of individual seasons where one would think he would be considered for the HOF. Strange pick considering some others who aren't in, however, his 22 years playing is impressive. He is in the top 50 all-time for hits and RBIs and played the most games as a DH in MLB history, so that may be one of the reasons he made it in. Dude had 25 homers and 100+ RBIs in his 19th season. As a DH, which is what he strictly became for the back half of his career, he was one of the best.

Somehow I thought Lee Smith played longer for the Cards than he did, guess he was just really good for a short time with them.

Only 4 years, but he had 33% of his career saves in those 4 years.

Harold Baines also got in which just boggles my mind. I’m an Orioles fan and saw him play a bunch and never once thought about him as a HOF player. He also never even came close to being voted in by the writers and fell off the ballot completely in his fifth year. Very bizarre selection by the Veterans Committee.
If Harold Baines is a HOFer than the Veterans Committee should have put Steve Garvey in like yesterday.
Garvey was WS champion, NL MVP, 10X All-star, 2X NLCS MVP and won the Roberto Clemente Award.
He also played the most consecutive games in the National League ala Ripkin-esque.
Plus he was a frickING bat boy for the Brooklyn Dodgers and then was a star player for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Harold Baines won 1 silver slugger award and was a 6X All-Star...that's his resume.

Important: Smith and Baines were elected not by @officialBBWAA, but the Today’s Game Era committee, a Veterans Committee.
What the frick is this.. Must be a HOF affirmative action committee.
Just looked it up. Pretty much.

Most support he ever got from BBWAA was 6.1%. He was off the ballot after 5 years. Baines' election is absurd.
Lee Smith, FWIW, got as high as 50.6% and stayed on the ballot for the maximum 15 years (now 10).

Harold Baines is the single most random HoF election I've ever seen

If Baines is in, I expect Dale Murphy any minute.

Baines being in should open the door to a flood of other guys.
I thought Lee Smith was already in.
