Verlander seems like the kind of guy who would think he wouldn’t have given up a home run to anyone if it weren’t for those meddling juiced balls.

I mean its pretty much settled science he would throw a cgso every game with a normal ball.

It's ironic that Manfred has been trying to sell this shite about increasing pace of play while also low key increasing high scoring games with a different ball and talking about banning shifts.

You realize you can play fast while still scoring a lot of runs right? People don’t mind a 3+ hour game if people are constantly on base or constantly scoring. Lots of base runners make for pressure packed situations and people love it.

It’s these boring arse 3-2 snooze fests where each side changes pitchers 5-8 times that is killing the pace of play

Ball is definitely juiced, doesn't seem to bother, say, Gerrit Cole tho

Cole has allowed 17 HR after allowing 19 all of last season. Though the long ball was a problem for him dating back to 2017 when he allowed 31.

I wonder how many teams and players will set HR records this year. It will be insane.

He is giving up 1.31 HR/9, compared to his career .84 mark. Now that’s not exactly apples to apples, because he gives up more fly balls than he used to. But by HR/FB: he is at 18% this year, only 10% career.

One person it doesn’t seem to be bothering is Max Scherzer. He has always been fantastic, but if there was a knock on him in the past, it’s that he was a little homer prone. But his homer run rate has never been lower than this year.

I think that’s his point. He now has to treat the 8 and 9 hitter like facing bonds in the World Series. Rather than being able to attack them directly and stay efficient with his pitch count.

I read an article last week about the way pitchers just aren't pitching strategically anymore nor know how to use their pitches. It was mainly just throw a fastball, no longer using the curve or change up in high pressure situations because they're not confident that they can throw a strike anymore. Wish I could find it and link it.

I am genuinely surprised by the number of fans who apparently prefer this brand of baseball.

I would be curious if you could find the link, because that doesn’t sound right to me. Fastball usage has never been lower. This year, 52% of pitches are fastballs. Five years ago it was 57%. Ten years ago it was almost 60%.

267 Yankees was the most in 2018, half of that (At All-Star break) would have been 133.5.

-10 teams have 133 or more at the All-Star break this year...
-7 more are in the 120's.
-League average this year (so far): 123
-League average last year (total): 186
-League average last year (Half): 93

I know this is not a perfect comparison because I simply halved 162 game numbers but the Ball is 100% juiced. They did it and then some.

I'm surprised that any MLBer would suddenly be this disillusioned with these tactics.

Did he honestly believe Selig's act during the McGwire/Bonds era? Guy is making 15 milly a year and doesn't know it's going on? Holy frick you gotta be naive to buy that load.

And then they stuck guys in front of Congress. "America's Pasttime" is true on so many levels.

All this truly underscores how amazing Tony Gwynn was.

It's no different than raising the mound Bob Gibson style and having multiple pitchers set ERA records.

Hitters would be crying if they raised the seams.

CWS neutered the hitters in Omaha to the extreme, just as MLB has empowered them.

Things are definitely out of balance right now.

Yeah I loved the years when things adjusted back after the steroid era. This is much better than the steroid era IMO but still kind of gimmicky

Look at Brett Gardner, DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, and Gio Urshela are all on pace for career years with the long ball. Some of those may be in a first full year but Brett has 15 HR’s which has to be almost a career high and DJ has 12 which probably isn’t far off his best year also. Yankees broke the team home run record last year and I think the rangers are on pace to break it this year.

So you link me a World Series game 7 to justify all 1-0 or low scoring games are awesome?

That’s like comparing the 2011 Alabama LSU 9-6 OT game to the 2007 Auburn MSST 3-2 game. One had implications and meaning, one didn’t.

Baseball has too many games for most of them in the regular season to mean anything. Because of that you need little packets of pressure and action packed instances in games. That’s why getting people on and threatening to score, even if they don’t, is way more entertaining than 3 straight lazy fly balls.
