June Jones primarily coached the Hawaii Warriors. At his direction the football team dropped the "Rainbow" part 2 years into his tenure and they didn't pick it back up until 2013.

At the time, the various sports at Hawaii would be the Rainbows, Rainbow Warriors, or just Warriors.

quote:

In 2000, UH changed the nickname of the football, men's volleyball, golf, and tennis teams to Warriors, while the men's basketball and swimming & diving teams remained Rainbow Warriors and the baseball team remained Rainbows.

RIP to June

I’ll forever link him to Jeff George and I always think back to that game on TNT. One of those random core memories you have no explanation for

SMU got the death penalty in 1987 and didn't get back to a bowl game until 2009. June Jones was there head coach and kicked Nevada's arse in the Hawaii bowl. RIP coach.

I remember June being Steve Bartkowski's backup for the Falcons in the late 70's early 80's.

He doesn’t have the winning % for the HOF does he? That’s a shame.

June Jones and Mouse Davis were the primary drivers of the Run & Shoot offense. They brought it from the high school level into college football, then to the CFL, USFL, and all the way to the NFL.

He bounced around all levels during his career, and definitely contributed to the game of football and its evolution.

R.I.P.
