I know that "it's Duke," but announcing retirement early can be risky for recruiting.
I think it was the off-season going into the 2014 season when Spurrier said that head about "2-3" more years left before he retired. The recruiting class we were building could not have decommitted fast enough. It got so bad that Spurrier later said that he really meant 3-4 or something like that to try to keep the class together.
Now, if I'm a recruit, I guess I do appreciate knowing ahead of time and maybe the one-and-done recruits won't really care anyway, but man did it screw us over bad and contributed to a very precipitous collapse after that 2010-2013 stretch.
