yeah i mean if you convert and get teh TD, you still have time + timeouts to go for the FG (which makes sense because you don't have to get as close for the FG, have a chance to get a fluke TD for the win, and if you fail, you are still tied and go to OT)

if you fail to convert the 4th? same thing. you have time + timeouts and you know CHI will probably run-run-run

A FG accomplishes nothing in terms of what you need to win the game

it accomplishes them not having to go for 2 to win the game

I agree with y'all in this thread that I kicking the FG wasn't the best call, but it does accomplish something

Lots of ifs but you still need a touchdown

:sigh:

right

but one to win and one to tie (because you know they would have played for OT)

so it accomplished something and I'm not typing this out again

Jim Caldwell has forgotten more about football than you will ever know in your lifetime.

Youre still down 4. Still need that TD.

I think people who agree with Caldwell don't fully realize they were IN THE REDZONE.

If you're banking on a defensive stop, you're getting ~15 yards of field position by going for it.

A lot of people for whom this is true routinely make terrible either or decisions against the empirical evidence.

That may be true, but coaches make blunders all the time. I'd imagine there are a lot of aspects of coaching that few if any on this message board could possibly hope to replicate, from scouting/recruiting, to player development, to leadership/authority, to playcalling, etc. But decision making in certain scenarios is definitely not something they have a monopoly on.

None of it matters because it worked. The Lions won the game so stop bitching about the call. Had Belicheck made the call, you would be saying he's such a great strategist.

Yeah...I mean, why would anyone want to discuss strategy around here?

Discussing strategy is one thing ,but the OP being a self righteous prick who sits on his couch thinking he knows more than a man who has lived/ breathed Football for decades is another.

So you've never, not even once have watched a sporting event and questioned a call a coach has made?

Seems hard to fathom.

if that's the case, this guy clearly has never watched Jim Caldwell coach football.

Not gonna lie, looking at the context, I feel like it was an awful decision.

I really feel like NFL coaches are extremely conservative. Caldwell's conservatism was wiped out by the fact that the Bears were happy to give the ball right back to them.

I don't care what the profession is, people aren't infallible...can't believe I have to explain this to what appears to be an adult.

Today: down 11, two minutes to go and two TOs. Down at the 1. 4th and goal at the 1.
They went for it, didn't get it.
Was it the right call or do you kick a FG and make it a one possession game?
