Honestly would be a quick way to squash this is to have Whit Weeks or someone on defense come out in number 9 on opening day.
The only line I would draw is I wouldn’t put 9 or 5 on a QB at LSU, more so to avoid insane expectations for that QB.

It's so weird how much there is no love for certain players unless they are currently winning for the fans team.. at the moment.

Casonova's jersey, not number, was retired. His last year at LSU was in 1971, and his jersey wasn't retired until 2009. So it took 38 years. He is the only 3x AA in school history.
Other jerseys, not numbers, retired include
#4 Charles Alexander. Last played in 1978, jersey retired in 2025. Took 47 years. Alexander was a 2x consensus AA and SEC POY in 1978. Also ended his career as the all-time rushing leader in school history
#21 Jerry Stovall. Last played in 1962. Jersey was retired in 2018. Took 56 years. Stovall was a unanimous AA, SEC POY, and runner up for the Heisman trophy. Also served as HC at LSU in the 80s.
#7 Bert Jones. Jersey will be retired this year. Last played in 1972. Took 54 years to retire his jersey. Left LSU as its all-time passing leader and TDs leader. He was a unanimous AA in 1972.
All of these numbers have been in circulation and will remain in circulation. Billy Cannon is the only number that has ever been retired and it was retired way back in 1959 when he graduated as the only Heisman trophy winner in school history and the leader of the only unanimously recognized national title team in school history at the time.
Jayden Daniels just played as recently as 2023. Why does he feel so entitled that LSU needs his blessing to issue his number to another player? It's taken LSU's all-time great players nearly half a century to have their jerseys honored, yet their numbers are still worn. Why should Daniels be treated differently? This new era of athlete entitlement is so exhausting

Cannon is the only player mentioned that can’t have his number used by a player. LSU outlined this specially in 2007 exactly bc of this kind of brain dead logic. There’s only so many numbers to go around and it’s silly to have players demand their jersey never be used again
And the “team accomplishment” thing doesn’t make sense when he also had the individual award as well. He got the same Heisman that Jayden did but also won a natty. You have to be extremely obtuse to not understand the difference between the two in terms of legacy

There’s plenty of love for Jayden in the fan base, and there still will be outside of this. This drama will hinder it for sure, but that’s why it makes the whole thing such a strange move by Jayden. At the end of the day the only person affected by this is his own personal brand and legacy at LSU.

Blaming kiffin is also pretty silly. He would’ve been breaking a promise made by another coach either way he went. Either piss off the 5 star elite corner on your roster now, who was promised the number by the previous coach before the Heisman. Or break a promise to a former player made by that same previous coach. Pretty clear why you would choose the one that can’t help you win a natty vs the one who can. No one is shitting on Daniels by giving his number to another player, just like no one is shitting on Bert Jones when his number is reassigned every season to a new player

when you're talking about a legacy, regardless of whether it's "fair" or not, championships absolutely matter. This is how it works in every single sport at every level. When you add that national title ring, especially as the star QB, you're going to move up on the totem poll in the eyes of the fan base
