Or as close as it gets in college football national championships these days? I mean they claim a national championship as recently as 1991 so it's not like a Mississippi State with minimal historical success.

But when you look back over particularly the championship game era, it's nearly entirely storied programs making the title game

Alabama
UGA
Ohio State
LSU
Tennessee
Texas
Clemson
Oklahoma
Notre Dame
USC
Miami
Florida State
Auburn
Michigan now for the first time this era

You don't put Washington in that class

not a true cinderella like northwestern or whatever but definitely not a program that you think would truly be playing for a national title in 2024 college football

They did make a playoff a few years ago so it's not like they've been completely irrelevant. But I guess you could call them one.

Washington beat Oregon twice, won the underrated Pac12 and beat the team that beat Bama.

storied programs

Washington is a storied program.

Washington has won 18 conference championships, seven Rose Bowls, and claims two national championships recognized by NCAA-designated major selectors.

Washington holds the FBS record for the longest unbeaten streak at 64 consecutive games, as well as the second-longest winning streak at 40 wins in a row. There have been a total of 13 unbeaten seasons in school history, including eight perfect seasons.

Don't act like they're Liberty.

No. A Cinderella would come from Conference USA. They were the #2 ranked team coming in and went undefeated the the very good Pac 12 this year. Also had a Heaiman trophy finalist. Nothing Cinderella about them

Good underdog story, not Cinderella. You can’t have a Cinderella in a 4 team playoff.

Not among the perennial modern contenders doesn’t mean they don’t have a history. They’re not a doormat

Maybe one and done once the star QB with extra COVID eligibility leaves though

Which will never happen in college football. Never. That's why I add the qualifier, as close as it gets in college football.

Washington at least of their current standing is in a lesser tier of CFP programs that just doesn't find their way to title games. A team like Washington in this game to me is an appreciable rarity.

They remind me of Syracuse hoops in 2003. Underrated and overlooked (at least by fans not the committee) yet with the best player in the game and solid supporting cast… but not a legit Cinderella.

Not at all

That program has a hell of a lot of advantages. They’re historically the second-best program west of I-35 with a national title and periods of truly elite play within the lifetime of most on this board, centrally located in a world-class city, a large and wealthy alumni base that loves football, and a baller arse stadium and facilities.

They’re not at the Alabama, ND, Oklahoma, Georgia, etc. level, but I wouldn’t hesitate to put them right there with Auburn, FSU, Penn State, and programs of that caliber. People should go out there and see that campus and watch a game there to get a feel for what that program is about.

Kansas State came as close as a team can get to making the title game in 1998 without actually making it. Weird situation considering they're historically one of the worst programs, but they had slowly been building up to that point for a decade. IMO they were the best team in the country; they weren't playing above their heads like a Cinderella would.

Cinderella would be a Tulane-type program getting into the 12-team playoff and then working themselves into the NCG.

They're crying about being the "underdog" again. Every team in the CFP could be crying about having to "prove everyone wrong". The "Disrespect/nobody believes in us" cliche is so cringey and tired, that I almost want Michigan to win. The Ravens are whining about it too. It's almost like these guys have no original thought.

talent-wise it would be like ole miss playing for the natty.
comparable programs historically too. the qb/wrs combo that washington trots out might be better, or at least as good as stroud and company during the 21 and 22 seasons. hard to stop.

Washington is pretty similar historically to Auburn on that list (and just behind Clemson) and started the year ranked ahead of Texas.

Washington has won 21 straight games including two bowl victories against Texas during that time. Texas, who you have on your list as a “storied program”.

And a program doesn’t have to be a Cinderella or a “storied program”. There is room in the middle.

I had forgotten that they made the playoffs in 2016. 2023 was the year of Jake Browning.
