Tech had a great coach, and a sport which at the time didn't have a whole lot of competition, pay, or attention.

The less money in the sport, the more likely the smaller schools can compete. See college baseball.

It’s probably already been said in this thread, but when Tech failed to promote Mulkey after Barmore retired, they sealed their own downfall.

Howard University Soccer won 2 National Championships in Soccer( 71 & 74) made several semi appearances. Teams of mostly Caribbean & African players.

First HBCU to win a Division I title in any sport.

As a kid, I remember watching them play North Carolina in the Championship Game in 92 or 93.

This was their last big run and they got screwed by a no call and NC won on a last second 3 by Olympic cheater Marion Jones.

Is it really that random for a school in Minnesota or a school in Denver to win at hockey?

It's not because DU has been solid since hockey became a NCAA sport

Does La Tech owe some of it's success to it being in the first 20 years of women's bball being a recognized sport?

The Lady Techsters were amazing.

I remember when they beat the Lady Cajuns 121-19

It was in the Cajundome prior to the Memphis State game when Penny Hardaway came to town.

Northern Colorado is tied for 5th all-time with Arkansas, one behind Mississippi State for most CWS appearances without a championship.

Since you said any sport, how about ULM and their Water Ski team. I lost count how many times they have won a championship.

NLU/ULM has something like 28 National Championships since the early 80s. What about NLU's WBB final four in 1985?

Doesn’t seem like it now, but UConn was a nobody until the 90s and then strung together 4 national titles

Jim Calhoun doesn't get nearly enough credit for what he built there. Accomplishing what he did in Storrs, CT is incredible.

I'll see your NLU water skiing national championships and raise you 34 Louisiana Tech powerlifting national championships.

The Lindenwood University Shooting Team (St. Charles, Missouri) has won more than a dozen national championships in shotgun sports.

Even more random was ULM beating the Techsters at their height to make a final four in women's hoops

A year or two she was on the local afternoon sports show in Monroe/Ruston. She said she would have been the coach up here if they just would’ve given her the 5 year. I would have given here 20 years retirement. It pissed get off my hey wouldn’t give her the extra year, so she bolted. That woman is not one to cross. Who knows how long she would’ve stayed but I guarantee the Lady Techsters would be a little more relevant than they are today. The woman can flat out coach.

And recruit. She would have kept them relevant. One of many athletic blunders under Dan Reneau. Now the tech faithful get their noses rubbed in it even more with her going to LSU.
