its also said in the reply that this is a SUMMER VARSITY TEAM. So these kids are already in the program. These are kids already gone thru the development years of 9th grade teams, jv teams and playing whatever summer ball wherever and however they like as long as they come back to mandeville and still show they deserve to be on team/play on team/start on team etc. I can promise you the younger mandeville coaches do not give a frick if you played for Knights or played for some other name your program.

again, you reply about different coaches doing different things. i don't care about different coaches.

yea i wasnt speaking about those specific coaches

and yea they do not give a frick where a kid came from when entering

and yea the better kids entering soph and especially junior year...they are going to be fine with them playing other national type teams...hell even the younger ones.

trust me im not arguing against playing travel ball

but i do have issue with it being forced on kids at a public school. i have no idea if that is what will happen at mandeville but I assume the expectation is they atleast play with the local team to get reps if they expect to ever be a starter.

what i dont understand is everyone being shocked in this thread.....pretty much every hs in LA that is 5a has some kind of summer team you are expected to play with. as usual in these threads lots of ignorance pertaining to HS ball and travel

but i have bee shocked a lot lately about how many people did not know or understand travel baseball in HS. many thought once in HS that all ends.... :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

rude awakening

knights having high school affiliated summer teams is NOTHING new. And Mandeville has about as good of a HC as there is. I can promise you he's not a guy that only drinks Knights koolaid.

The idiots on here all eaten up with tournament ball is entertaining. Catholic players used to play under the Marucci umbrella, and now the Knights organization. It's a convenient way to keep the high school teams together in a structured environment. Nothing shady about it whatsoever.

mandeville is not your typical public school type demographic (for the most part)

covington on other hand, totally different demographic (for the most part)

Yes. I have found if your kid plays for another organization, it can easily affect playing time for your kid. Not always the case at every school. It really depends how much the head coach is tied in with the organization. Some coaches don't care as long as you are playing some type of competitive baseball in the summer to get reps but some school really do factor in if you are part of the "school organization affiliate" team.

I’ll try to clean this up. A lot of misinformation in here. Only read 3 pages deep so apologize if somebody else clarified.
This appears to be a HS partnering with a travel organization to send their HIGH SCHOOL players to play summer ball.
High school players play summer ball in various ways. Many schools do something called Metro ball. Essentially it’s a high school team that is not sponsored/ governed by the school. Over the years metro has really fallen off in quality and consistency due to it being on weekdays, extremely hot, many rain outs, all for glorified scrimmages. Enter the “travel ball” portion. Some coaches create or partner with a travel ball group after the season so their players can compete together in the same system. Benefits are, turf fields (often college stadiums) so more consistent schedules and the kids are competing for something at least. Many top programs have chosen this route. In some pockets, Legion ball is still very viable (thank God), and in those areas a lot of HS coaches send their boys to play in the local Legion team. Lastly, some prospects take the route of playing in combine style showcases. Show up, play a bit, leave, and who gives a damn about the score.
This appears, based on the coach’s post, to be a relationship to get his HS boys higher level, consistent reps in the summer

So is Mandeville fielding a traditonal Legion/Summer Leauge team and then partnering with Knights to have an additional Tournament team and play more games than Legion?

Or is Mandeville not having summer ball and just having their players play for the Knights?

I also just saw that the Knights are trying to get teams going in NOLA.

I think publicly partnering with a program like the knights is better than the shady way some schools have done it.

Teurlings brought in a travel ball coach as an assistant 4 years ago and he brought his entire 2027 class team with him. These kids got preferential treatment from day one and a lot of talented kids were pushed aside with no opportunity to earn playing time. As a result, there is more literal daddy ball and pay to play at Teurlings than most travel teams. It’s a big reason the head coach was not retained. Hopefully the new head coach returns to a baseball focused competitive approach.

Let the school put together their own travel ball team, they do it wrestling...

Rummel has a club, Brother Martin, Holy Cross, Jesuit, Catholic, Teurlings.. There's a bunch.

However, those kids aren't obligated to go to those schools...

I'm not even sure if American Legion is still a thing for high school players. I know that Gaultier & Amadee fields a very competitive team, but I think those are graduated seniors and/or younger College players.

there was a school summer league that was played this year, games from monday thru thursday which sort of makes it difficult for kids that play thursday thru sunday for travel teams. makes balancing arm care a bit difficult for this 5-6 week stretch. i'm not sure if this current league set up will continue next year or if mandeville coach is planning now to do something different next year with the forming of this team.

exactly

same goes in soccer and basketball for the most part.

We are more interested in how we can make money off youth sports over actually developing our youth.

Whether it's music lessons, dance, cheer, tennis, golf, baseball or basketball, you're going to get charged for quality instructions. Why is is this so hard for some of you to understand? I'm guessing most of asking these questions have not raised kids.

Its amazing we survived doing it without this for 80 years before travel existed

Youth sports being an absolute billion dollar industry is a new phenomenon. There was no need at all for this. But parents hands have been tied and now they are tying them around the neck even further

Nah, this is an existing rule. So you told me i'm incorrect but i don't believe i am. Is this only applicable to varsity roster kids? Is it applicable to underclassmen kids? etc etc.

You are citing the wrong rule. The limit on coaches and players for independent teams that you cited is for teams during the school year.

Summer rules are a different animal and governed by 4.5.2. Coaches are allowed to coach all their players on same team during the Summer months.

Barbe and Catholic have been doing this for years and are the top programs in the state.
