Stolen from an SI social media post.

What other comparable free agency signings measure up?

Drew flipped the script on New Orleans FB bringing a championship and the most prolific offensive output in NFL history during his tenure.

What should the measurables be? Longevity? Championships? Cultural Impact on the new city?

No Trades...Just Free Agency signings

Lebron to LA
Ichiro in Seattle
Priest Holmes to KC

Reggie White picking GB over San Fran was pretty massive

Deion to SF and to Dallas also biggies. Not sure either team wins SB 29 or 30 without him.

But it’s up there for sure

Reggie White
Reggie Jackson
LeBron

I think are bigger FA signings than Brees in terms of play

Brees may be for what he did for the city

In terms of legacy, production, and impact its gotta be way up there. Not to mention the Saban/Dolphins side story that completely altered the course of CFB

If we’re not limited to the NFL then Sol Campbell is top 5 easy.

Whichever ones end in titles so no Ichiro or Priest Holmes despite their talent.

Yes, because a lot of teams seemed to write him off after that shoulder injury

Technically, Kurt Warner was a FA signing. He was never drafted. Turned out pretty good for the Rams. Two SB trips. One win.

Though of course he didn't have the overall impact on St. Louis the way Brees did on NOLA.

Max Scherzer has to be considered. People scoffed at the amount at the time but he's been elite, won a WS, multiple Cy's, 20k game, etc.

The biggest difference between these guys and Drew Brees is that their former teams (and almost EVERY OTHER TEAM) wanted to sign them.

I'm not certain, but as Brees was coming off of his rookie contract and he would have been a restricted free agent. I believe at the time San Diego could have tendered Brees a contract but chose to just let him go. And, the only other team that showed any interest in Brees was Miami but Saban turned him down because of his shoulder.

The Reggie White signing was big simply because GB wasn't looked at as a FA destination at the time. However, Holmgren had taken over in 92 (a year before White signed) and already started the rebuild with Favre at QB. They were 9-7 the year BEFORE White signed.

Contrast that with the Saints. They were one of the worst franchises in ALL of sports, not just the NFL, for most of their 40 year history prior to Brees. Compound that with the fact they literally spent the entire 2005 on the road and were, in 2006, coming back to a city in the early stages of a complete rebuild. There was ZERO reason to think the Saints would be any good in 2006. Instead, the finished one win short of the Super Bowl. Payton and Brees turned them into a perennial contender.

White certainly made GB better and more attractive to FA's. But they probably would have been good even if White wasn't on the team. The ENTIRE trajectory of the franchise changed with the Brees signing...and it maintained for 15 years

In terms of football players changing teams, Brees is #1.

Brees and Payton saved New Orleans as a franchise. The team was a shambles after 2005. The Saints have been a "winning franchise" for 15 years now.

Reggie White was more of a "final piece of the puzzle" guy. The Packers were already at that level.

Peyton Manning in Denver:
*Won an MVP.
*Went to two SBs in four years, winning one.
*2x 1st team all pro.

ETA: could also add without him, Denver doesn’t clean up in FA year after year with guys ring chasing.
