Short version: No, not remotely.

Long version: Thompson was unabashedly who he was; he never backed down from a fight, from being confrontational, and being opinionated about race.

That said, John Thompson was a coach first, and an inveterate competitor. He had little time for media distractions, unless they were helping him recruit, then he'd tolerate a tiny bit of circus.

say what you want about Deion, but he recruits white kids.

he has 8 recruits right. ow and 2 are white.

LSU has 24 commits and 1 guy is white.

back in HS, I worked DePaul Basketball games at the Rosemont Horizon. was a pretty sweet gig tbh.

anyway, must have been 1992 when Coach Thompson and the Hoyas were in town for a nationally televised Saturday afternoon game on CBS and I remember being personally insulted that there wasn’t one white face on the entire team/staff. ffs even the walk-ons at the end of the bench were black kids lol never seen that before (or since).

on a positive note, the Blue Demons (who had plenty of white kids) played one hell of a game and knocked off the mighty Hoyas that day. good times…

Ummm...yes? I mean, does anyone seriously doubt this? I don't think he was egregiously or exceptionally so relative to his time, but he was hardly a trail-blazer for racial equality.

That was my point. But you would be surprised at how many people would deny this.

lmao well they must have left this dude at home…I can see why, considering the fact he played in 4 games all year and missed all 10 of his FGA

“The only European recruit in the John Thompson era…saw increasingly limited playing time over three years on the varsity, scoring on 13 just percent of his field goals attempted and scoreless in nine attempts from the three point arc”

I remember the Thompson time and reading about the team. I was in Houston then and UH got the local coverage. I don't remember Thompson getting the huge coverage during UH games that I've seen Sanders get just in the short time he's been in Boulder.

It was a different time, coaches weren't paid as much so there wasn't as much jumping from job to job. I don't recall any chatter about Thompson being on the make for his next job.

I guess I worded it wrong. I didn’t mean comparing Deion and John Thompson but did the whole country hate John Thompson and Georgetown at that time like people want to see Deion and Colorado fail right now?

Why is Deon a racists? Has he ever publicly stated that he doesn't recruit white players because he wants to give as many blacks a chance as possible at a Georgetown education?

We know . We know that Bear & Rupp, etc... were just " men of their times" , but those on the receiving end of these bigots, like Thompson & his peers, get an odd amount of criticism. Privileged ex segregationist Jerry Jones & buddy Jimmy Johnson ( both 180 lb linemen) & many others benefitted greatly from minorities being denied access/ opportunities to public schools in which millions paid taxes into. Let's save the vitriol for Thompson.

This is correct, it was said by John Chaney NOT John Thompson.

Hard to tell back then unless you were at the game with no social media/message boards, but it did seem a large % of the country did actively root against Georgetown. That said, the BIG difference was that Thompson was actually a top coach and his teams usually did the arse kicking for many years. Nobody outside of DC would have likely known Thompson's name or his takes on black/white, etc if they weren't winning.

Back then, you got on TV and highlights and what not by being good, it was earned. Deion is more of a coaching Kardashian, famous for being famous and small wins are amplified ad nauseam. Deion doesnt make me want Colorado to lose...the constant hype and discussion and stunting by idiots in the media does.

Thompson and those Gtown teams were bullies that were better than you and mostly let their play talk for them, there were no "Coach Prime" tendencies there. Apples and oranges.

I see him jumping to the NFL soon as a DB coach.

lol bless your heart. Deion is barely humble enough to be a head coach.
