I agree that it has hurt the out of conference rivals. How much did it suck if your team lost a game in October and it meant your season was over. There are now more meaningful games.

On the flip side, the 2024 Michigan/Ohio State game meant absolutely nothing. In previous eras of the sport, that game would have (rightfully) knocked OSU out of title contention.
The 2007 Pitt/WVU game was arguably one of the most consequential college football games of all time and easily the most devastating loss I have ever seen for any college football program. In a 12 team playoff era, no one would remember it happened and it would have meant nothing.

It probably would've cost WVU a first-round bye so it probably would've been somewhat consequential, but obviously not the program-destroyer it turned out to be.
The 1998 Big 12 CCG and 2011 Oklahoma State-Iowa State game both stand out as games that'd be inconsequential in this current era. Both Kansas State & Oklahoma State would've been top 4 seeds in the 12-team era.

I agree that you do lose some of those earth shattering games of importance that came around some times. I think most fans would give that up for their team still having a meaningful game in November despite losing in September or October.
While rightfully knocked out in previous eras I think this was a flaw in the previous system.

That was Bama's first loss of the season and it's a legendary finish. In the 12, heck probably in the 4 team, playoff, it would've meant nothing.

There are more meaningful games in that a 1 or 2 loss team still could make the playoffs, but a lot of late season games between undefeated or 1 loss teams mean a lot less now since both are likely shoe-ins for the playoffs. Especially if they expand to 24 teams

I will admit, as much as I complain about the 12 team playoff's effect on the regular season, I did enjoy most of the playoffs last season, outside of the Tulane and JMU games. Overall, it was really entertaining.
But a 24 team would really make it hard to get excited about the CFB regular season.

It honestly felt like the BCS era was probably the best in terms of national parity and different teams from across the country being in the mix.
1998- Tennessee
1999- Florida State
2000- Oklahoma
2001- Miami

2003- LSU
2004- USC
2005- Texas
2006- Florida
2007- LSU
2008- Florida
2009- Bama
2010- Auburn
Then Saban really took over and it got less interesting.
In that span from 1998-2010, 11 different teams won titles in 13 different seasons from across 6 different conferences. I'm biased as an LSU fan, but I'm convinced that was the "golden era" and when CFB really took off and reached its pinnacle.

The overall talent on the field is very good. The overall atmosphere has taken a hit though.
