Looking at last year's 12 team pool, how many had a real shot?

JMU, Tulane, Texas Tech, OU, Bama...zero shot

UGA, Ohio State: probably had a shot based on talent but were flawed as a team in other ways. I'll count them as having a shot on talent alone.

Oregon...no. They had a favorable route to the semis and got routed by an actual contender.

That leaves IU, Miami, Ole Miss (With UGA and OSU getting eliminated by two of those 3 in earlier rounds).

So last year, 3-5 teams had an actual shot of winning it all.

Now it's going to be Ohio State. They will be able to buy 5 or 6 of the top 10 portal players and 3 or 4 of the top 10 recruits with that new huge money.

Agreed. Anyone under 35 or so wouldn't understand.

A single regular season game does not seem to have the meaning it did 50 years ago.

Winning a conference title does not seem to carry the weight it once did.

Overall, it is a more professional product, but it is nothing like what made college football great. More money is being spent on players and coaches than ever before. They have better facilities and tools than some professional teams. However, they have devalued what college football and college sports is about.

The education value means nothing. The former rivalries mean nothing. The games are a place to be seen, not to cheer on your school. It is one and done college basketball on the football field. It makes 90% of the games irrelevant. The playoffs degrade the regular season. Almost all the bowls are irrelevant. The overall cost has become prohibitive to the average fan. It also seems where the schools are continuing to ask for more from their alumni to support a product on the field that is fast becoming separated from the school itself.

What about in the 90’s? Sure, LSU was largely irrelevant and lousy, but you had elite teams in every conference and every part of the States

I appreciate Saban's greatness through and through, but CFB was absolutely soul-crushing to watch when he was around. Pretty much nobody was getting a shot at the NC without going through Bama, sometimes multiple times.

Other elite coaches like Carroll, Meyer, Dabo and Smart were/are good for a stinker here and there, but Saban went unbeaten against unranked teams for something like 15 years. The ultimate buzzkiller.
