I don’t think Brooks Robinson is underrated.
He’s generally considered one of the greatest defensive 3B of all time.
He was a very good hitter, had a long career, and quickly was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Who is underrating him?

Spahn actually has most wins by any pitcher who started his career after 1920
I heard this stat earlier in the week-
There is no pitcher in baseball that is under the age of 30 and has thrown more than 5 complete games in their career.
Warren Spahn threw 84 complete games, after his 40th birthday.

I named my first born after him, so there's that.

Agreed.... However... Mike Scmidt is the most TRUE example of a perfect 3rd baseman of all time.....

quote:lol I posted that in 2014 but I agree he's not top 3:
Not a traditionally strong MLB position but I would put Schmidt, George Brett and Chipper Jones ahead of em.
1.Schmidt
2.Brett
3.A-Rod
4.Boggs
But I think he's a bit better than Chipper.
I dont think 3B is historically a weak position especially if you include Cabrera, A-Rod and Rose

When I was a little kid Sports Illustrated put out a baseball game. It had pitching/batting/hitting charts all in blue/red/green.The one I played had the 1970 season teams.
The 1970 Orioles were studs. The defensive ratings of Brooks at 3B and Mark Belanger at SS were insane. That pitching staff was pretty adequate, too.

Most underrated of all time would probably be offensive lineman. Larry Allen should be in the discussion of the best football players of all time.

If you’re talking greatest OL of all time; Anthony Munoz, Johnathon Ogden or John Hannah would probably be rated above Allen. But Allen was a beast.

Steve Garvey never sniffs the Hall and I don't know why.
He peaked at 42.6% in 1995.
He did everything a player was supposed to do that was highly valued when he played before Sabremetrics.
He basically hit .300, drove in 100 runs, got 200 hits and 20 HRs...for an average.
Well they say, he didn't hit enough HRs. He hit 32 in 1979, the HR leader in both leagues hit 48.
He was just this consistent player who hit for average, drove in runs and hit HRs.
A 10X All-Star, NL MVP, 2X NLCS MVP, 4X Gold Glove, 6 200 hit seasons.

Eddie Mathews says "hey."

At 3B I pick Ron Santo as most underrated. IMO he's a tick ahead of Brooks on the all-time list. Brooks was certainly superior on defense, but Santo was not a butcher in the field and he was a far superior hitter (.464 to .401 advantage in slugging percentage and a 125 to 105 advantage in OPS+).
IMO the 10 best 3B ever were Schmidt, Mathews, Boggs, Beltre, Brett, Chipper, Santo, B. Robinson, Molitor and Rolen.

Good topic
I got to give it to Stan Musial. To me..one of the 9 best players in the game...ever and most "fans" wouldn't know the last name.
Robinson is a great choice though as well as Elgin Baylor
But I would add Artis Gilmore to the list. Absolutely great player and no one talks about..at all. 60% from the field. Dozen NBA all star games plus ABA. Still at the top of fg% blocked shots and rebounds...took Jacksonville University to the NCAA championships against Woodens UCLA Bruins
And absolutely one of the most gracious people you will ever meet

It is compared to others positions especially infielders.

Are you really taking Brooks Robinson over
Chipper if you're building a team? C'mon
.930 OPS vs .723? Chipper also has 3 silver sluggers and Gold Glove. I don't think any modern GM picks Brooks over Chipper.

A-Rod and Rose
Not sure you can make the case for them as
career 3rd baseman... especially Rose

1,815 hits at home. 1,815 hits on the road. One of my favorite stats.
Well, he was the man

About what?
Why are you taking a defensive specialist # 3rd over a very good defensive 3rd baseman who has an OPS that's 200 pts higher,a better WAR and a career BA that's 35 points higher?
