"Sold Out" Meaning....
Making it more OPEN to the outside world.
Letting guys like Dude Perfect run all over the course to film YouTube Videos etc..
Augusta is still very Private, but I'd say you maybe saw the spike/change occur in the mid 2010s? The trend has just been rising...

I will grant you that person exists and they are lame, but it takes far more of a try-hard to be the guy who hates on The Masters for "selling out". Also laughable that you complain about it being too popular but only care about it if Tiger is involved.

You couldn't be more wrong. The membership book alone is worth billions. It includes presidents, politicians, celebrities, business moguls, etc.
Yes, but isn't the membership dues actually pretty reasonable? Especially for a club like Augusta?
I remember seeing the dues a few years ago and was really surprised at how low the costs was.
I googled it, not sure how accurate google AI is with it..

How much does a membership cost?
Like its membership roster, the club keeps its finances close to the vest. It’s difficult to find an accurate tally, with reports ranging from an initiation fee between $40,000 and a half-million, and annual dues between $10,000 and $50,000.
The club has roughly 300 members, and the costs are considered a bargain, though membership is only accessible to the world's most influential individuals.
Wonder how the $40,000 to $500,000 initiation fee works... who gets to pay $40,000 and who has to pay $500,000.

Key revenue sources:
Merchandise: Roughly $50M–$70M, representing nearly half of the total revenue.
TV Rights & Sponsorships: International rights and exclusive, limited sponsorships (roughly 4 minutes of commercials per hour) bring in significant income, despite low domestic rights fees.
Tickets/Badges: Roughly $39M–$40M.
Concessions: Roughly $8 million, characterized by deliberately low pricing, such as $1.50 for sandwiches.
Total Revenue: While some estimates place the total at ~$150 million, more recent analysis suggests a higher total of over $300 million per year, driven by immense demand
But much like the Cowboys the expenses to run that place must be astronomical.

Anyone who has had a pulse or cares about golf since Tiger has been involved understands they have an uptick in viewers when he's involved...
Whether you want to watch him crumble, or you want to watch him succeed.
Nantz and the CBS crew love the storylines and that is what the Masters is all about.
Got it with Rory last year...
What will be the story this year?

They are believed to leave hundreds of millions of dollars on the table every year. The concession stand prices stay low.
They make zero dollars in TV rights, they give the rights away to ESPN on Thursday and Friday and then CBS for the weekend. This allows them to get full control of the broadcast. They limit sponsors and only run 4 minutes of commercials an hour compared to 20 minutes per hour for other PGA events. NBC pays $93 million for broadcast rights for the US Open.

If Augusta National were to be placed on the market for sale (obviously, never going to happen), would it be worth as much as the Dallas Cowboys?
With The Masters tournament and all the licensing/merchandising a hypothetical new owner could take advantage of, it kind of makes you think.
The rough estimate of the value of Augusta National is around $10-12 billion. This is the real estate, club assets and holdings etc.
The Masters tournament has to be treated as a separate entity. The tournament produces around $200 million per year. The merchandise is another separate entity that produces around $70 million per year.
So, I'd say that if you wanted to take over ANGC and the Masters tournament you'd probably be looking at north of $15 billion. That includes the property, assets and 10 years of forward earnings from the Masters Tournament and merchandise sales.
This is obviously all fantasy and a very rough estimate. The real value of the place is connections and power. Not really something that can be financially calculated.

That's pretty much where my son and I ended up on our discussion. Last I saw, Dem Cowboys was in the neighborhood of $13B. It was an interesting question.

They also do not sell merch online. You must go there and buy it or buy through resale markets. So yes, there is the "Todd at the watercooler wearing the quarter zip" but it's not nearly as common as if there were an online shop. Most of those "Todd's" are likely wearing something from Etsy. Many millions of $$$ are left on the table. But The Masters does not care. That keeps it exclusive.
A ton of other retailers put azaleas on golf things and act like it's Masters, but none of it is official Masters merch.

An absurd statement. The Masters has never sold out and will never lose its luster.

Augusta National doesn't actually share its attendance figures for the event.
However, it is believed that around 40,000 eager golf fans pass through the gates from Thursday to Sunday
1 X a Year
Cowboys have 90,000
8-9 X a year
math doesn't math

What am I gate keeping, I'm not an Augusta member. The "I only watch if Tiger is playing" guy is dumb asf to say The Masters sold out. To who?

The Masters is an example of excellent marketing and promotion. It’s not the oldest golf tournament but now it’s the most popular and most revered.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. So it makes it logical why Wimbledon is the most popular tennis tournament.

There's a few reasons for that and I don't know that marketing really plays into it unless you consider the exclusivity to be marketing.
The Masters is the only major played at the same place every year, and it falls on the calendar when much of the country is starting to dig their golf bag out and play themselves.
If you didn't grow up as a middle or upper class Augusta native (they all know somebody) or willing to fork out way too much money, you have to win the ticket lottery. Any unwashed heathen can attend the US Open or PGA Championship.
And lastly, it's a famously beautiful golf course that is meticulously maintained
