The Georgia game of ‘18 is when I knew he was different, UCF solidified my thought in that he was gonna have a good year in ‘19.

This is one of the games that showed he was a damn gritty baller.

Another one for me, even earlier in the season, was the 4th quarter comeback in Jordan Hare. Saw some definite “It” factor there. Then with the way he finished in ‘18 I had very high hopes for him in ‘19.

However…

Nobody ever thought he would have the single greatest season for a QB in college football history

This is correct as well.

Burrow became Burrow when that UCF prick blew him up.

It was over after that.

I argued that he was Danny Etling 2.0 during the summer.

He seemed like a nothing because you were a casual. The dude played the 29-0 game with a separated throwing shoulder, numb-nuts.

As someone that knows ball, I knew Joe Burrow was an NFL level qb the second I saw him mixing it up with Miami pregame in his first game at LSU.

He also called a sweet audible during that game that worked during perfection. I didn’t know he’d become the best QB in history at that time, but I was confident that he was going to become an NFL level QB, sometime during that first game he played for LSU.

I think he took that cheap shot by the DE from UCF in the bowl game, got pissed, and just decided to get up and have the greatest season in college football history.

Last three games of 18 was when the passing game got going. The bowl practices helped a lot as it was really his first time getting extended time with everyone.

Last three games against Rice, A&M, and UCF:

971 passing yards, 9 touchdowns, 1 interception
156 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns

Also, the line was an absolute abomination for the majority of the year.

And as previously mentioned, he separated his shoulder in practice before the Alabama game. With that said, there’s no way an sane and logical person could’ve predicted what happened.

I thought rumor was He either dislocated his shoulder prior to that game

It came out in the lead up to the 2019 Bama game that he’d separated his shoulder in practice just before the 2018 Bama game. I’d never heard any rumors, I just remember O saying it.

Also, the UCF hit being the catalyst is a cool story, but dude was showing flashes all year long in 2018. These are a few that stood out to me:

- the Auburn comeback
- UGA beatdown (esp that long run)
- the aTm 7 OT game - not sure how this doesn’t get more mention. I guess because we lost but Joe was a warrior that day
- his general play down the stretch/ post bye (excluding Bama) when he seemed more comfortable and consistent

To the OP, I thought he’d have a Mett-type second season jump, but nobody saw GOAT status coming. Not even BuckeyeJeaux.

I cannot emphasize how much different the LSU offensive scheme was between those two years. Burrow had about 30 rush attempts in our 7 OT loss to A&M. The game plans were a shell of 2019. Every position was better in 2019 than 2018 and things clicked. It was a combination of many variables.

If LSU doesn’t hire Joe Brady in 2019 to bring in a real passing attack, Burrow doesn’t get nearly the same chance to shine.

Since he failed miserably in his first NFL opportunity, let's wait to see what he does with his second opportunity.

I'm not saying he wasn't a big part but without Ensminger, I don't think we do as well.

More than a few people saw he would be very good, he was very good by LSU QB standards that year. The main thing I saw in 2018 was his decision-making was on another level from anyone I had seen at LSU.

But I didn't expect it to be 2019 level any more than I expect JD to be the level he is at now.

No, but like the poster above said, the last 2 games he showed signs. I was not surprised he did very well because I saw how accurate he was, but I was surprised that he did THAT well.

There was an off-season thread on here debating whether Burrow would be drafted or not. General consensus was mid to late rounds based on Danny Etling going in the 6th.

Was it common knowledge that he was gonna be a great player the next year? I watched some of it the other day and he just seemed like a nothing. But I can’t really remember if lsu fans knew he was gonna be great or what the atmosphere was like. 2019 JB caught me completely off guard I know that.

Burrow had an injured shoulder to the point he likely shouldn't have played against Bama that year. Toward the end of the year he started showing flashes and I was hopeful he would make a decent jump heading into 19. I think most LSU fans thought he would have a good year, we didn't expect the GOAT college season for sure.

The 7 OT game was a good point of progression as well. The offense was forced to open up and you started to see the gunslinger awaken in him.

He got to LSU in May of ‘18, missing spring practice. His first official practice with his team and coaches was the first day of fall camp in August ‘18. His first career collegiate start was September ’18.
I think most fans were optimistic that we’d have a good offense in 2019 especially after the last 3 games of 2018. Obviously the Joe Brady hire was a contributor, but Burrow having an entire offseason with his receivers while only taking a couple of grad school classes, and having the experience and maturity of a 5th year senior accelerated his progress.

I don’t know about lsu fans but there was a small % of OSU fans who wanted him to start over Haskins in 2018. He had performed well in two spring games and seems poised and has good touch etc.

I was on the Haskins train and he was great for OSU in 2018 but hard to predict 18 months later

How in the world did he separate his shoulder in practice 2 days before the biggest game of this year? I assumed that QBs don't get touched these days in practice in the days leading up to games.
