EA Sports FIFA.

You might be right. It is one of the only sports games to have sold over 100 million copies (Madden has sold 90 million). It's also super popular on college campuses and among teens. It be interesting to compare MLS attendance with the rise in popularity of the FIFA franchise.

EA Sports FIFA. that's right, i think a video game is the main catalyst behind soccer's current growth. EVERYONE in that 16-25 age group plays FIFA.

People may laugh at that statement, but this happened to me (only the other way)...NCAAF is what got me into football when I came to the US. Plus it helped that I went to a school where football is a culture.

Most big clubs couldn't care less about turning a profit.

In other news, due to the mass popularity of COD, U.S. military sees largest jump in enlistment numbers since WWII.

jesus, soccer fan getting so butthurt here. I just think it's silly to say a video game is going to make soccer popular in the United States. The only real answer is when the best athletes start playing soccer and the U.S. has a Pele while winning the World Cup.

ignorance

Not liking something isn't a function of ignorance. It's whiny and sad when people vomit up this opinion.

better paced

You realize the chief reason many people do not like the game is because of how slow-paced it is? Consistent play does not equate with a good pace - it's just a different pace. If long and consistent play with very brief periods of excitement was a great pace, cycling, NASCAR, and marathon running would be the best-paced sports.

I played soccer for 8 years. I understand how the game is played. It's extremely dull to me - very little scoring, very few opportunities to score. It's an exercise in frustration to watch some teams play when you see the same pattern repeat over and over again - forward advances the ball, sends to the other side of the field, then kick it back to a fricking defender or a midfielder who's closer to the goal than the middle of the field. That's what soccer boils down to at the international level with decent teams for probably 60% of the game as a conservative estimate.

MU made a whopping 19 million. Still, my point stands.

The Glazer family loaded all of their debt (from purchasing the team) onto the team after purchasing it

They've been handicapped by it ever since

That's fine. Everyone enjoys different things

I think that people who enjoy soccer get defensive when people go out of their way to talk shite about a sport. I mean, it's a sport. Soccer fans who get weirdly militant about enjoying a sport deserve to be criticized, as well

I have to think it helped. Quite a few of the soccer fans I know weren't soccer fans until they started playing FIFA and began to realize the sport is quite interesting.

I wouldn't say FIFA is the end all be all to popularity in soccer, but it's helped tremendously with non soccer fans in the US especially college age. I can't tell you how many people in the dorms would see me watching a soccer game, ask who is playing, then recognize a team or a player because they love them on FIFA. It definetly helps build familiarity

Agreed with all of this. FIFA has been great for promoting the popularity, but other things will have to change for it to reach it's potential.

There are many factors for the increase in popularity. FIFA helps, as does the immigrant population, the increase of television coverage, and other things. It also helps that so many kids play soccer when they're young. That said, I have to think the biggest factor in soccer's continuously rising popularity has to be the World Cup.

that's once in four years though... a bigger one would be to develop MLS and have some type of competitions with top Mexican and European clubs which can be every year

He's right. I started playing FIFA and learned the players, teams, etc. about six years ago. I now watch soccer every chance I get.
