Ehhhh ... I just think for non-fans it's a matter of ignorance. But it's a better paced game than anything America has to offer. So the "slow-paced" argument is really fricking retarded.

Soccer match ... 2 hours.

Football: 3 1/2 hours
Baseball: 3 hours
Hockey: 2 1/2 hours
Basketball: 2 1/2 hours

Like I said .... the "dumb American" ignorance contributes more than anything imo.

No one thinks that. We think that's so great and ipso facto it is popular.

I didn't see popularity mentioned anywhere in the OP's post.

He said "if soccer is so awesome why is this happening"

He's basically trying to say "all of you soccer fans adore this sport...but it must not be that great since it's losing money. It's losing money because it can't earn it's keep with revenue (ticket sales, tv ads, etc). Therefore, it must not be in high demand and/or that popular"

Maybe I deduced more from this post than I should have, but I expect the worst from you idiots who bash soccer

I understand I won't change anyone's minds ... but it's pretty cut & dry. I don't always have time to watch a full football game. But with soccer playing early Saturday & Sunday mornings when it's in season, I have time to sit down & watch that. And once you know the rules, what's actually going on, etc., it's a very good sport. And this is coming from someone who did not grow up playing.

But we'll agree to disagree ...

It's the "most popular," "most played" sport (or whatever you all like to call it) because it is a poor sport. Plain and simple.

Imagine that ... not everyone is as spoiled as the United States so they play a sport that isn't American. THE frickING HORROR OF IT ALL.

I interpret a "poor sport" as a sport that can be played by poor people. Which yes, football is. I'm sure you're trying to make a supersonic soccer boom again though.

So why don't poor Americans play it?

This is pretty shocking. How the hell did MU lose 300+ million dollars?? I just read a forbes article that said it was the most valuable team in the world. Guess they just made that up.
ETA-never mind I read that wrong. Manchester City lost 300 mil and MU made a whopping 19 million. Still, my point stands.

By poor sport, I mean it can basically be played without much investment into it. You also don't need to have a really big number of players. All of this combines to make it easily accessible.

So if you are a kid growing up with 2 options (no sports or socer), you'll paly soccer.

because it isn't in our culture. We're far too pretentious of a country and American Football is more a part of our culture. It's simple ... we invented stuff like the NFL & baseball ... so that's what our kids have been raised on. It's more a part of our culture.

Point taken,

But if it's such an "awful sport", then why is it gaining traction here in the States?

Most interesting post in this thread.

The poor financials of the soccer clubs are more of a statement against free market capitalism than they are against the sport of soccer.

I'm not at all bashing soccer.

I was just readingt hrough the thread and saw people praising it simply because a lot of people watched.

I was just coming in to point out a poor argument. I don't think I've ever really been involved in a soccer board debate, or argued against soccer.

I don't understand how it's even possible to pay those monstrous transfer fees AND pay player wages and not lose a shitload of money. There needs to be something about the transfer system.
