I was going to post this on the Soccer Board...but it's too good for that.

If Soccer is so awesome why is the Premier League losing more money than ever?

The biggest loser? Manchester City, thanks in large part to comical player spending, somehow lost $309 million—easily the worst financial year for any sports franchise ever. (Remember, these are the numbers from last season, not the one that just concluded, but it's not like City reined in the spending.) Chelsea, a year before their Champions League victory, lost $107 million, and required a massive loan from owner Roman Abramovich. Liverpool lost $77 million. Manchester United—Manchester United!— only turned a profit of $19 million.

Because everyone loves soccer

So what's your point here? Because TV revenue sharing is killing the top franchises and budgets are out of control, this means that Soccer isn't popular?

Win the Premiership and lose that kind of money, I guess some folks think that's a good tradeoff.

There's really nothing to defend, spending has gotten out of hand across Europe, and something needs to be done to fix it.
Doesn't change the fact it's still the best and most popular sport in the world.
The economics of our two seperate sports worlds are pretty comical. European Soccer is purely free market capitalism, with American Sports trending towards Marxism.
Also, I RA'd for it to be moved to the Soccer Board.

very few soccer clubs turn a profit, its the same problem with college football. Only a few universities in the country turn profit off athletics.
Most owners of big soccer clubs know they aren't making money with the teams, it's more of like having a pet to them. They're usually super rich already so its no big deal. Soccer is still the most widely played and watched sport in the world.

I didn't see popularity mentioned anywhere in the OP's post.
Anyone that argues the economics of soccer is not in a dangerous spot right now has their head stuck up their arse

The spending is out of control but I bet you can't find one city fan right now who gives a shite that their owner who is a multi billionaire lost 300 million and got man city it's first championship in 40 years

Not having a salary cap is the problem. Period. Full stop.

Like someone said earlier, people who buy top clubs arent in it to make profit...unless they plan on gutting the team.
The money it takes to make an average EPL team to EPL champions is why you see Man City with such a large loss. With the new fair play rules, this will begin to change but in order to buy the best players it costs a lot. Theres no chance of a "super friends" going to one team in FA. You have to pay big bucks for the best players end of.

Quality post that added a lot to the thread.
Tell me sir, why "frick soccer"?
I'm gonna guess .. "it's boring and I'm a motherfricking American and they're pussies."

I'd say the salaries are probably not as bad as baseball ... but baseball has 81 home gates per season to offset that, while soccer has 30-35 on a good year tops.

I like how soccer fans think that because it's popular, it's so great.
