True but soccer players have about 50 different sponsors stitched on their jersey every time they take the field. I would really hate it if that ever happened to American sports.

The average MLS in-game attendance has already surpassed the NBA and NHL, and it's closing in fast on MLB.

I would hope so, considering the MLS season is about 40 regular season games vs. about 80 for basketball and hockey, not to mention the fact that there are only 19 MLS teams and 30 each in basketball and hockey.

You exaggerated by 48. You have the primary logo, and the Nike/adidas/etc. logo.

By poor sport, I mean it can basically be played without much investment into it. You also don't need to have a really big number of players. All of this combines to make it easily accessible.

You realize you just described virtually every popular sport?

Baseball - Bat and ball
Football - Football
Soccer - Ball and goal
Basketball - Ball and hoop

See how that works?

I travel to Africa every summer to deliver soccer equipment (I'm here now). They are exposed to every sport I just named and still choose to play soccer over the rest.

My theory on why soccer is not popular in the US is that by the time we gained independence (and hence break free from Great Britain's sphere of influence), soccer had not been invented. Hence, we do not inherit this from the mother empire. This contrasts to other countries that were still British colonies well into the 20th century. It's not accident that baseball is very popular in countries that are under our sphere of influence (Caribbean countries, Latin America, Japan, and Korea).

Another theory is that since we wanted to break away from Britain, we refuse to like the things that they like. However, I don't buy this theory as we still use British Units in lieu of the metric system.

In the Premiership, players have the primary sponsor and just the logo of whoever manufactured the uniform on their jersey.

So that's one sponsor on the jersey.

NASCAR has a billion sponsors on the cars and on the drivers' suits.

And believe it or not, the sponsor on the jersey really isn't that intrusive.

Our most popular sport is a derivative of an English sport, rugby union.

No, I think that the Americans who don't like soccer to the point that they go out of their way to bash soccer do so out of jingoism.

umm...

sorry but football is by far one of the most expensive sports to play. Sure, the actual ball isnt that much but all the pads and helmets cost a pretty penny.

If you want to see a lot of sponsors, look at NASCAR or foreign hockey leagues.

People go out of their way to bash sports they don't like. I hate baseball and NASCAR and I bash them at times. I like soccer, but don't love it. However, I would like to see it become wildly popular.

I never see kids in a neighborhood playing in full pads.

He's talking about the care essentials to plsy the sport ... so let's not try to skew the argument against soccer here.

not trying to skew anything against anything.

just pointing out that if you are going to play in a legit youth/adult league its an expensive sport.

flag/neighborhood football is a hell of a lot different than real football and most people prefer to try and play a sport as close to the real thing as possible if they are doing it in an organized setting.

ergo, cheaper sports like basketball and soccer are going to have a greater shot at popularity simply b/c its easier to set up a league.

LSUSOBEAST1, when you are talking about worldwide popularity you really need to factor in how much it costs to start a legit league for kids to play in.

when a kid gets into an organized league they have a greater chance of really loving the sport.

true American football leagues are much more expensive to start thus there are far less of them worldwide.

soccer and basketball are much cheaper which is why they have a natural advantage in gaining popularity with the youth.

Also, poor kids in the barrio or in the Haitian slums don't have full pitches and nets. They'll just put two shoes about a foot and a half apart at each end of the field and play with no goalies.

No sport requires start up funds at the lowest levels.

HAHAHAHAHA

I didn't play soccer till I was 18. I've never played in an organized league. I would choose to watch/play soccer over any sport in the world. I love it as much as you can.
