re: I see national championship tickets on sale for as low as $150 on StubHub

Honestly the rental car and hotels were not terrible. However, if you waited to buy plane tickets after Alabama beat Oklahoma it is easily 1K a plane ticket to get out there.
Atlanta is the worse because that is the primary airport for both Alabama and Clemson. It is an exact replay of the game in Arizona.

I got on a Bama alumni association charter from BHM to PHX

I wouldn’t watch it for free

Takes 30 seconds to figure out why prices are so low...
Plane tickets to the bay area from BHM or ATL are outrageous.

This. I have a Bama grad co-worker who has been to every Bama National Championship in person since 92. This is the first one she & her husband are passing on due to the $1K minimum flight each to the Bay Area & nothing around the stadium in Santa Clara. It is a major haul from San Fran through traffic for a 5pm local game time & nobody wants to stay in San Jose.
Plus, Imagine Dragons playing halftime is also not helping the situation at all...……………...

Same as AU/FSU at the Rose Bowl, I wanted to take my dad (Auburn alum) but to fly from NC to California was stupid high. Game tickets weren’t that bad.
Same thing for World Series 2017. $850 a plane ticket to Houston.

It's crazy how regional these teams are. You could probably get 30,000 OSU fans from Arizona & California to attend this. You don't even need Ohio residents to pack it out.
People are downvoting this gentleman, but he ain't kidding. When tOSU came to Cal in 2013, Cal sucked and attendance was bad, but the stadium was almost packed because of tOSU fans. It was embarrassing, it was like a tOSU home game (but in a smaller stadium). I was shocked at how well they travelled + local fans.

Locals there don't care about college football.
Both teams involved are burnt out on national championship trips and aren't as motivated to go.
Perfect storm of bad conditions for live attendance.
They need to stop having it on a Monday as well imo.
Was about to post pretty much the same thing. With the current format, Alabama fans have had 8 bowl games in the past 4 years and Clemson has had 7. Thats a ton of traveling for fans and gets too expensive for the average fan who would normally travel for a game, especially since this is a cross country game.
If they want to sellout stadiums, they would just host playoff games on campus of the higher seeded team with a neutral site only for the championship game. When the playoffs inevitably expand to 8 in the future, the attendance would be even worse if fans had to travel to 3 neutral site games

what also needs to be said, is the advance knowledge of this game matters.
all these people are booking everything on a week's notice to go to the NCG, instead of a month's notice like it was before the CFP

Blows my mind that greater San Fran, a city full of hobos and homos, gets to host a college football game. Why do we let cities that don’t GAF about a sport host a game?!?
When will we stop pretending that college football is anything more than an east of Texas sport? Cold weather places are off limits for playoffs so the playoffs should rotate between these five stadiums and these five stadiums only:
-Super Dome
-Jerry’s World
-Atlanta’s Butthole
-Tampa
-Miami
Anywhere else is idiotic.

This is important, too. Plus, it's on a Monday, a week+ removed from the major holiday season of Christmas/ New Year's. Most people have to get back to work.
You're in luck. Next year we get two weeks between the semi's and title game.

Alabama turnout for the Orange Bowl looked pretty poor. Once Oklahoma fans filed out the Alabama fans made up way less than 50% of the stadium.
Alabama had more fans than OU.

I was under the impression that the CFP National Championship location would rotate between the traditional NY6 Bowl sites like the BCS did.
Did that go away?
I easily could've missed that being the case. Sorry in advance for not knowing.

Indy would do a great job and get good attendance, too, IMO.
Indy does a fantastic job for big games/events. Perfect setup.

If this game were in New Orleans it would be packed like the game last year.

It’s a bidding process like the super bowl

These games are made for TV! When will we start to realize that? It has nothing to do with fandom or loyalty... Television and nothing more...

It would probably garner more interest locally if Notre Dame made it in. Most people in Cali have no idea where or what Clemson is
Posted on 1/2/19 at 10:41 pm to Hetfield
It's all about the game being in fricking Santa Clara. I lived in that shithole for way longer than I would have liked. It's easily the worst place to watch a big football game or any good game for that matter.
But it's all about $$ for this one, so you reap what you sow.
