I think the secret is out that Santa Clara is the worst place in the US to see a football game.

Arizona for Bama-Clemson Part 1 was similar. Miami was quite low too. Atlanta last year for Bama-UGA was 10x higher. The highest yet was Bama-Clemson in Tampa. Quality has nothing to do with it. It's 100% about proximity

It's crazy how regional these teams are. You could probably get 30,000 OSU fans from Arizona & California to attend this. You don't even need Ohio residents to pack it out.

The field didn’t look to be in great shape when the Redbox bowl was played a few days ago.

Why dont they just give up and go artificial with the field.

Its like they tried to bring the crappy Candlestick turf to the new place

These teams and fans have attended a lot of playoff games all over the country the last few years.

Sooner or later it becomes stale. It’s not a “once in a lifetime or even generation” event when it happens every year.

The distance and bland location exasperates the lack of ticket demand.

It's also because people are tired of Alabama in the national championship game. Even Alabama fans aren't going because they have won so much.

Alabama turnout for the Orange Bowl looked pretty poor. Once Oklahoma fans filed out the Alabama fans made up way less than 50% of the stadium.

Yes

Lots of lovely reviews of this place

The highlights of the stadium include staying in the concourses because the stadium is shitty but only the concourses in the most expensive club section not any of the regular concourses because those fricking suck.

Ohio State has 46k undergrads.
Clemson has 19k undergrads.
Alabama has 33k undegrads.

The notion that those schools would have fewer fans with resources to travel seems very logical given those numbers.

People who love to hate on small schools for poor attendance (Clemson is the only small one here and still does well with fan attendance), aren't thinking very clearly.

There will likely be empty seats.

The Bay Area is a horrible geographical spot for the two fanbases.

Locals there don't care about college football.

Both teams involved are burnt out on national championship trips and aren't as motivated to go.

Perfect storm of bad conditions for live attendance.

They need to stop having it on a Monday as well imo.

The entire playoff system is horrible for in-person attendance.

This. Especially when the teams are repeats. It's 100% made for TV, which isn't a terrible model but it just doesn't make for strong ticket sales.

Dan Wetzel wrote a good article on this today

quote:

Ticket prices on the secondary market for Monday’s college football national title game are cratering – get-in prices hit $150 Tuesday on StubHub and experts say it should continue to drop. By comparison, last year’s get-in price peaked at about $1,700.

“Prices are trending lower than we have ever seen before,” SeatGeek.com’s Chris Leyden told Yahoo Sports. “Demand is down.”

Alabama had an enrollment of ~20k until the mid-early 2000's.
