What I don’t get is why are they wasting pitches in the minors? They can limit him in the majors just as easy but still get the benefit of 3-4 innings of top tier pitching. With his K rate he’s gonna be lucky to get past 5 innings anyway so why not use every pitch in the majors? People are going to be upset when he finally gets promoted and still only goes 4-5 innings because he’s K’ing everyone with some foul balls here and there.

Yep. Kids shouldn't touch any off-speed(excluding change-ups) until they are 13-14 IMO.

What's wrong with a kid tossing a knuckleball or the eephus

And it worked. You hardly ever saw any arm injuries w/the Braves staff, save Smoltz.

And even Smoltz pitched until his mid 30’s before having TJ surgery. Kind of insane considering how hard he threw and how much he threw the slider.

pitch speeds were tracked much differently back then, though. Ryan def threw as hard as Skenes. Ryan was also kind of a unicorn

This is true. Today’s velocity is measured soon after the ball is released where prior to the 2000s, velocity was measured before home plate. Check out the documentary “Fastball”. It does a good job of breaking it down. Nolan Ryan would have been around 105 - 107 when he was throwing his hardest in the mid to late 1970s.

I think it all depends on how much his arm was used growing up. IMO all these injuries over the last few years is from overuse from a young age. The older guys Ryan, Clemens, Petitte etc didn’t have travel ball year round like players do now a days.

There was also not a focus on spin rate back then as there is now.

Clemens sat at 96-97.

Ryan touched 100 but didnt hit it consistently.

You do realize that is more of a function of modern velo guns vs older ones used in Ryan's and Clemen's heyday, right? The entire major leagues didn't all just collectively start throwing 5-6mph harder in the span of about one decade.

I don’t know dick about arse when it comes to lat coefficients and all that jazz

But it simply doesn’t look at all like skenes is straining or trying to throw hard. It looks fluid

Given his size and his frame, he may not be putting excess stress on his arm. He may just be a fricking monster who can throw the same ball harder than dudes who aren’t built like him.

And thus, the Rant Baseball pitching wanna-be experts crumbled to pieces.

Except maybe they are as we figure out what goes into velo and deal with the need for more Ks in the analytics era… (LSU isn’t recruiting the arms they used to)

6 months?
6 years?
16 years?

He could be Ryan or David Clyde.

Their objective is to keep him there till June and they'll delay the time he hits free agency by a year.

+1

He is not pitching 200 innings this season anyways. So if they start him now, they would have to shut him down early to not give him too many innings and overwork his arm.

yep they measured much closer to the plate which makes Ryan's fastballs in the 70s even more impressive

I’m convinced some on here and the Rant watch very little baseball outside of their kid’s 11U travel team.
