My point is where is the money made without commercials. Are field and jersey advertisements really equivalent? Because we have those in America too. Especially advertisements around the field.

On top of those advertisements seen across the globe, and multiple TV rights with other countries, soccer has its own economy inside their bubble with transfers. A team like Barcelona can develop 3 youth players, and then sell them for 10s of millions each with add ons ensuring they get paid whenever the player is sold in the future. Teams with a tighter margins can fire sale players, but unlike baseball where it's offloading salary, teams use the transfer fees to make up revenue.

Also, don't forget you can go to 6 continents on earth and see people wearing a Man united kit or shirt. The merchandising revenue alone for big clubs is staggering.

The rights are being bought at a premium all across the world.

This to me is the only equilizer to the American sports television/commercial model.

Since teams in the EPL probably have 10-12 major distribution deals, they can generate somewhat close to the same as a major N American team in revenues.

EPL rights are really sought after all over the world, plus their time zone is so that it can span two hemispheres. US and S America all can watch EPL games in the a.m., while they are being played late afternoon and prime time in Europe and Middle East and Africa.

Really, only the far east and Australia are left out of a watchable time zone.

US sports really have to rely almost solely on the US TV market to make all their big $$.

Soccer is worldwide.
Not sure people in rest of the world even know who Tom Brady is.

Not at field level. Specifically not in the NFL. MLB is more prone to having field level advertising, but they’re the only major US league that has a (mostly) static camera view.

Hockey and basketball now have jersey advertisements as well.

Not nearly the same size or prevalence as in soccer.

Ads on soccer kits are comparable size to team names in baseball/basketball.

I'm sure it's been answered already, but I think a good part of the reason is how overboard Euro soccer goes with the jersey advertisements.

The actual team name is on a tiny patch, while the advertising company is the main event. I mean seriously, for casual fans, how is it possible to see this as anything else but Emirates v Etihad Airways.
I think the NBA has a good medium. They allow advertisements, but it doesn't look anything as ridiculous as soccer jerseys.

What's even worse is soccer uniforms have the ugly ads sublimated. So they can't be removed if you buy one.

I just wish they would write the name of the team or city on the sideline or on the pitch so I could see where they are playing if I tune in in the middle of a match.

Home teams are listed first on the on screen scoreboard

If soccer was huge in the US networks would probably find times to double box the screen with commercials on one side and the game on the other.

Yep. Hell ESPN already does this by adding the second larger box below the ticker at the bottom of the screen. It's ridiculous.

Hockey does. The boards are constantly changing ads, but the speed of the game kinda makes it easy to overlook.

It's not. Many of them have a mountain of debt and are barely profitable. It's why Real Madrid President Florentino Perez along with a host of Premier League teams tried to get a Super League off the ground a few years back. Because none of those clubs make the profit that American sports franchises do.

This isn’t a revenue issue though. It’s an expense issue. OP is discussing the revenue side - ad sales.

If these leagues were non-competitive monopolies with drafts and salary caps like US leagues, they’d make tons of money like American sports franchises.

American sports teams should either forego their antitrust exemptions or have no ads on the uniforms at all.

Outside of a few players, soccer players dont get paid like they do in America. Only a few English teams will have a payroll over 150 million.

Never understood why Chevrolet was on the MANU kit. Maybe Chevrolet is more sexy than Vauxhall or Opel. FIFA makes billions in TV contracts and bribes worldwide. That money is supposed to be passed down to Federations and leagues.

Fans certainly help.
the English 3rd division average attendance is higher than the nba - admittedly there is a significant cost difference

The NBA has ads on the court itself. Ads on the scorer’s table. Ads on the basket, ads on the top of the backboard for overhead shots, and more.
