How is soccer as profitable as it is with zero commercials?

Soccer players get paid a ton of money. I assume the clubs are doing pretty well and obviously have truly global followings at the top levels. There are even extensive "minor" leagues, the likes of which we really don't have on the same level here in America.

Most of the wealth from American sports is driven through TV contracts. The TV providers in turn, make their money off of advertisements. Commercials in American sports have continuously crept up in length and very noticeably the last 5 years to me. Soccer meanwhile seems to be doing fine and only has true commercials at halftime. Of course they have jersey sponsors as well as on field advertisements, but so do a lot of major US sports now.

I would kill to be able to watch our major sports especially football, without so many freaking commercials.

Do you not see the adboards wrapped around the field? Not to mention ads on the jerseys for non-international teams.

Those cost just as much as a commercial, if not more, considering its a global market with multiple tv networks across multiple countries paying top dollar for rights.

Uniform sponsorship and advertising all over the stadium, I guess.

Soccer jerseys look like fricking NASCAR jackets with all the ads like Emirates Air, etc.

I mentioned those in the OP. Major US sports have ads around the stadium and on the field often. Hockey and basketball now have jersey advertisements as well.

Not really. They usually have one big logo in the middle. I do really hate jersey advertisements but I could probably live with them compared to commercials that are increasingly making live sports unwatchable.

The ads that they overlay onto the fields and marquees. The ads on the jerseys. So essentially every jersey sale is marketing. The players all work to have personalities which makes them marketable.

The fan experience is still promoted. All US sports have gone away from the fan experience (except the masters), so die hards still want and can go to matches.

Premier league has a pretty lucrative tv contract

But they are a lot more expensive for big soccer clubs than any NBA or NHL squad, both because of the real estate size on the jersey but also because a brand sponsoring a champions league club will be seen more globally than a brand sponsoring an NBA or NHL team.

It's not. Many of them have a mountain of debt and are barely profitable. It's why Real Madrid President Florentino Perez along with a host of Premier League teams tried to get a Super League off the ground a few years back. Because none of those clubs make the profit that American sports franchises do.

You haven’t looked at a full soccer kit lately. In Mexico, there are ads on the front of the shirt, on the back above the number, below the number, on the front and back of shorts and on the socks.

Mexico and South America definitely overdo it, but pretty much all of the top and middle tier Europe leagues keep it manageable... and those are the leagues you should be watching anyway.

Don't fans have to buy a new "kit" every other year.

The EPL teams constantly have new deals with different sponsors.

All goes to the highest bidder.

I feel like in stadium ads really aren't noticeable in American sports with the exception of like behind the plate in baseball

My point is where is the money made without commercials. Are field and jersey advertisements really equivalent? Because we have those in America too. Especially advertisements around the field.

On the flip side, I think the tight production package helps with viewership. If a match is set to start at
1:00 PM, then it starts precisely at 1:00, and is over by 3:00.

That helps attract viewers because it only requires a two hour commitment, but it puts a lot of pressure on the pre-game, half time, and post game commentary and commercials to generate revenue.

In league matches such as the Premier League, usually there are multiple matches happening at the same time. I’m guessing post-match highlights of the other matches keeps viewers engaged, but I don’t have any facts or viewership ratings to back up that opinion.

Those clubs (under the threat of relegation) can’t afford to have rebuilding years (think the Pistons, etc. just soaking in TV revenue and not trying to compete)

I just wish they would write the name of the team or city on the sideline or on the pitch so I could see where they are playing if I tune in in the middle of a match.
