How fast could you drive an Indy Car with zero experience?

Watching the Indy 500 qualifying and most of the drivers are in the 230-232 MPH range.

How fast do you think the average person could drive an Indy car in qualifying assuming they don’t crash in their attempt?

160? 170? Would a complete amateur that had only driven regular vehicles their entire life have the balls and skill to drive faster than that around the track?

140-150 maybe. I think the intimidation factor from the track itself would be the main hindrance. Carrying speed into those big banked turns would be scary.

We drive that speed on the interstate.

Probably more like 90-100 on a track.

Ive gone over 150 on the back straight at COTA so I’m pretty confident I could go over 200.

Yes I think I would get above 160, but not saying I wouldn’t crash

If you are talking about Indy, those turns are not very banked at all. 10*

How fast? Just fast enough to hit the wall.

I got my 73 Chevy Vega GT 115 mph on a two lane hwy when I was 15 years old.

Drove a red 69 Mustang fastback thru a 1/4 mile in 15.6 seconds at a airport runway drag strip.

Got a buddy's late 70's Z28 up to 125 driving home to Farmerville from Monroe after the bars closed a midnight on Hwy 33. He was asleep. He woke up when I swerved to miss a cat that ran out in front of me after I'd slowed down to 90.

Coming home from my parent's after Christmas in Dec. of 1991, I drove 95 mph from Tyler to Terrell on I-20 the week I bought my 1992 Mazda MX6. They told me it came broken in.

I'd go with 180 mph.

I'm 67 now so my reflexes might not be very sharp but who cares. Put the pedal to the floor. I'd try to get to 200.

Yeah, the flatish banking would make it difficult through a few practice laps but then Indy would be an easy track to drive once you figured out your marks

Me: Hopefully fast enough not to crash

Most of the US under 40: Zero because they don't know how to drive manual transmission...

I'm in my early 30s but my first car from my grandfather was a manual. I routinely left my car unlocked and keys in it because I had nothing valuable in the car and I knew no one would be able to steal it. Made it easy to never lose my keys when they were always in the cup holder.

Thing is about those cars is that the faster you go the better they will handle because of all the aero crap. Driving it at half, 3/4 speed means you’re going for a spin.

Would think the average driver could barely drive them.

Indycar is notorious for its lack of power steering and generally requires much larger amount of force to turn the wheel than any car anyone that isn't used to it to drive .

Would imagine most could not even get going from stalling trying to release the clutch

Indycar uses semi automatic transmissions, paddle shifting. No clutch is used except when trying to put it into first gear
