Didn't hire some bum just because he was a great player.

I've never understood why UCLA and USC struggle.
Good schools, perfect weather, a large population loaded with football talent.

USC shouldn't struggle. UCLA and the other UC schools have tough admission rules. They don't have the flexibility that you'd find in the SEC or most of the BIG.

UCLA is one of those schools that is super attractive to 18 year old males. You live in the nice upscale area of LA, surrounded by baddies everwhere, endless things to do amd places to go with said baddies, and you get to play in the rose bowl for home games.

If you want to pay me 500k to commit, sheeeit you dont have to ask me twice.

UCLA is weird because they were a very solid football program for decades and then fell off the map once Carroll arrived in LA 25 years ago.

UCLA, Illinois, and North Carolina - three programs that have zero excuse to not be good football programs.

UCLA has a small fan base, plays 30 miles off campus and has some academic restrictions. It is a great all-around school, though.

North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Alabama, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania all have had roughly the same amount of players in the NFL (in terms of total players) for the last decade or so (between about 50 and 60 most years); the Midwestern states are 2 - 2.5X larger in terms of population, but they do still produce a lot of talent in totality (obviously not quite as good as the Gulf Coast South in per capita terms, but still lots of good players). Illinois isn’t the talent juggernaut it was 50 - 60 years ago, but there’s still a lot of talent in the Chicagoland area.

There’s the big 3 (FL, TX, CA) then Georgia then that group above all clustered together terms of total talent.

The state of Illinois has 16 4 stars or better in the class of 2027 according to 247. Only 3 of them are committed to Illinois. The rest are committed to, respectively, Miami, Notre Dame (X3), Kentucky, Auburn, Texas, Florida, Michigan (X2), Wisconsin, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Cincinnati.
