I've never understood why UCLA and USC struggle.
Good schools, perfect weather, a large population loaded with football talent.

UCLA's biggest hurdle might be the distance from campus to the stadium

The Rose Bowl is 26 miles from the main campus in Westwood. You don't get the traditional on campus atmosphere there

and you get to play in the rose bowl for home games.
Not for long - they're moving to SoFi.

Didn't hire some bum just because he was a great player.

To be fair, UCLA only hired that bum because Chip Kelly bolted for Ohio State in mid-February. They didn't have many options at that point, and Foster had at least been on staff for several years.

Hired a good coach

Correct, and they now have an excellent "CEO of Athletics" that understands the business of D1 and how it's an entertainment venue. They're a solid program across the board but will be even better in the coming years.

They'll make the 12 team playoff before LSU will

The state of Illinois has 16 4 stars or better in the class of 2027 according to 247. Only 3 of them are committed to Illinois.

Illinois is never going to get those players and is lucky to have 3. Illinois doesn't have the track record or pull to get the best players out of that area.

This.

I’m certainly no college football historian, but I can’t imagine Illinois’ football pedigree is anywhere near that of ucla, and that’s even with ucla being totally irrelevant this entire century

Illinois is a shite brand. UCLA is in LA, has some history, and has some of the best unis in the game. Not even close.

Start with an underperforming core from last year- check

Add a cohesive group of key players in key positions with continuity in the system from the coach's past gig? Check.

Roll out with a very manageable schedule, that 'arrives' with a game against a team that seems to have fallen off a cliff since last year? Check.
