Teams literally couldn’t play defense. It was man to man only.

This ended in 2002. It didn’t cause the scores to go up.

The reason the scores are so high now is cause “analytics”/people started jacking up 3s

The NBA was a lot lower scoring in those days. And the playoffs are lower scoring than the regular season is.

It took a while for coaches to adjust and change their mentality

It took even longer for teams to understand optimizing strategies

Lakers decided to play Boston's game better than Boston. Celtics 15 -17 years ago used to beat teams up.

Yes and like you say “quick Center” but still 6-11, 7 foot guys. Imagine KG or Duncan or even Dirk playing the 5 in today’s game. These are considered great players, some of them All-Time greats but their profiles would be elevated with their skill sets in today’s game.

Because Detroit invented hack a shaq. They didn't hide the fact if you came in the lane, it was going to be painful. Todays NBA is boring as hell. No defense at all.

I never played it, but I can tell you 90's was hard to watch.

Hyping up average teams as great.

Outside of MJ and Shaq, no other top 25 player in their prime played in the 90's on any decent team

Bird and Magic were past their prime

Kobe and Duncan were still too young.

The actual answer was that it was a product of two things-- pace and a lack of spacing. The NBA declined as a scoring product, as the pace ebbed, paired with much less free space for shooting without as many specialized systems to enhance scoring.

You want to know how pace has changed over the years? From the NBA beginning to track pace in the 73-74 season, to 1988-89, the pace of play finished under 100 a total of one time-- 99.6-- it would fall into the 80s at the nadir, spent 20 straight years under 93, and didn't recover to 100 until 2018-- a number that's still only been eclipsed twice after.

So, a slower game, with less shooting, and FT shooting about a percent to two percent lower than the historical norm, and you ended up with some really dreadful scoring totals.

Agree 100% but there were factors that led to it.

I forgot Hakeem. That was my mistake. Ewing and Malone are not top 25. Barkley is close.

MJ
Lebron
Kareem
Magic
Bird
Russell
Wilt
Shaq
Duncan
Kobe
Curry
Hakeem
Durant
Robertson
West
Garnett
Jokic
Giannis
M. Malone
Erving
Wade
SGA
Nowitzki
Isiah

Everybody above has won a championship or MVP, most have won multiple of either or both.

Maybe Barkley can slip ahead of Isiah and Nowitzki, but that about it. In 5 years Luka and Wemby will be there.

K. Malone is between 26-30 with Barkley maybe. Ewing is no where close.

Reverse this and ask how did footlocker? promo % discount for every point over 100 up to 25% during the Shaq says at LSU and now college basketball is in the 60-80 point range per game.

You must not remember. They literally got together and changed the rules that had been in place for decades because it had become so slow and boring.

At some point, the league essentially decided carrying was no longer a violation. This led to bigger wing players being able to be primary ball handlers, and opened up the floor a lot.

Big factor that doesn't often get talked about.
