How did nba games in the early 2000s sometimes end with 80-78ish scores?

83-79 lakers beat Boston in game 7 in 2010. There are plenty of scores like this during that time period. A team has to play absolutely horrible, worse than Detroit tonight to score that few points. Guess it was rebound, walk it up, run the clock, run plays, dump down….still don’t see how it’s possible

Teams played defense, refs called violations.

Full 24 seconds on offensive rebounds, less three point attempts

Team play defense now. I’ve seems tons of defensive effort this playoff. Violations on the other hand…

We're doing the "they played defense back in my day" with the early 2000s now?

You could hand check
You could double team away from the ball
You could play zone
Driving to the hole was extremely high risk

I think the fact is rosters weren’t filled with all offensive talent. Most everyone on a team can shoot somewhat decent or score somehow. But mainly it’s the 3s. I remember rip Hamilton fighting around screens for mid range 2s. He was automatic

More defense
Fewer three's

Analytics figuring out shooting long 2's isn't worth it

Teams were all built around big guys down low. Bruisers who protected the rim physically. This was the predominant basketball theory all the way from George Mikan so pretty much all teams were built that way. Like the idea of a guard being the dominant player was thought to be pretty much impossible. MJ changed it all and changed the way teams were built

Much bigger teams often with multiple non offensive, oversized centers to counter Shaq. The only reason people think of players like Tim Duncan, Rasheed Wallace or Kevin Garnett as forwards is because Shaq played in their era. If those guys played right now they’d be dominating the NBA as Centers. You also had a large influx of young, HS players who didn’t have a clue what they were doing which bogged down offenses as well.

You also had isolation taking the entire shot clock for one attempt.

Watching Mark Jackson back a guy down for half an hour was painful.

This is a huge part of it. Freedom of movement era changed how the game was played.

We had a 93-79 game and a 98-78 game on the same night in the playoffs a few weeks ago.

There were a lot of low scoring games in the Magic/Pistons series.

Teams literally couldn’t play defense. It was man to man only. They would just clear out the lane and go ISO. shite was lame

But I bet you’ll tell me there was defense in the 80s.

FYI, the 80s were the highest scoring decade.
