Because the game is designed so you literally can’t.

It seems all in good fun but young hockey players seem to have some lacrosse level swag these days.

It's possible, but the overall culture of the upper level leagues definitely will tamp that down for a while if not indefinitely.

Its just an inherent thing in Hockey. This scene from Shoresy kinda sums it up nicely. the longer scene is even better (she talks about how they self police which I think is a massive part of it). I love hockey and have for a long time and I really hope it keeps doing well.

The culture of youth hockey has a lot to do with it. There is no AAU type bullshite.

Was thinking about that. I don't know anything about youth hockey, but in the Big 3 American sports, some guys start getting treated like stars and meal tickets at a ridiculously young age.

We're also so obsessed with stats (and betting) in the other sports, that we celebrate individual yardsticks whether they contribute to team wins or not.

Fist bumping all the players on the bench after a goal with the goal scorer getting the honor to go first just kind of underscores what hockey is all about. And you don't usually see a guy celebrate for more than second or two without going to his teammates after every single goal.

Worst thing that ever happened to him was getting shipped to Winnipeg.

He was a model teammate in Atlanta. Something about the Manitoba Truck Stop and living in that microscope screwed his head up.

This is really when most of the fighting happens now. Bennett had a pretty bad hit on Neighbours last time they played, and the two do not ever take the face off, so it was pre-arranged on the ice by the guys. This was a respect moment.

From the time a player starts in youth hockey at 4-5 years old it is instilled in them the team aspect of the game. Sure, there are selfish hockey players as you go up through the ages, but the system weeds them out. There is no room for selfish players on the team. Selfish players simply don't advance to the next level. They don't make the Bantam or Midget AAA team. They don't make it through Junior hockey. Selfish players simply get cut.

By the time you get to the NHL that element has been weeded out and the good culture guys are left.

Now with HD TV it is the best to watch.

No flags.

Players try.

Fast pace and simple rules.

I was thinking this last night.

HD was huge for the NHL.

It's still difficult for newbs to follow the puck, but better than it was.

But for all the is good and holy, can we STOP with the corner camera switch. It's a terrible angle and you lose all awareness of what's going on around the ice. It's awful.

No question the league has its share of phenoms but the structure and complexity of the game tends to have a diluting effect on the individual.

Yeah that’s not it. What’s different about the players???????

A hockey player will play 20 minutes of a 60 minute game. You absolutely rely on your teammates an extreme amount

Trying to compare that to basketball where a player will play 35-40 minutes of a 48 minute game

Wasn’t Gretzky putting up absurd numbers when he was a kid?

And now we’re tracking Ovechkin going for his goal record…

You’ll never hear a hockey player talk about “building their brand”

There's a saying in hockey that isn't repeated in other sports: the name on the front means more than the name on the back.

That's not just jargon. That's true to the culture of the game as a whole.

Related: Hip hop/ghetto culture has not infested the NHL like it has the NBA.

You’ve just never lived in a hockey town. Even when I lived in DC, Ovechkin was a bigger celebrity than anyone on Redskins or Wizards.
