NFL ruled the Falcons had improper contact with prospective unrestricted free agents Kirk Cousins, Darnell Mooney, and Charlie Woerner during the two-day negotiating period prior to the start of the 2024 League Year.

Atlanta will forfeit its original fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and pay a fine of $250,000, while General Manager Terry Fontenot has been fined $50,000.

While the policy permits clubs to engage with and negotiate all aspects of an NFL player contract with the certified agent of any prospective unrestricted free agent during the two-day negotiating period, any direct contact between the player and an employee or representative of the club is prohibited. This includes discussion of travel arrangements or other logistical matters, which the club acknowledges took place with regard to these three players.

Literal incentive for teams to do this in the future. Some cash and you essentially trade a 5th round pick to get ahead of everyone else to sign star Free Agents? Sign em up

So they can talk to the agent but not the player directly?

This is a nothing burger.

Goodell just eliminated tampering rules.

Why not begin negotiating now with 2025 free agents.

The funniest part is the people who defended the Pennix pick because they said the falcons know they are losing a first rounder next year and had to take a swing

This was not even a slap on the wrist. It was nothing.

Goodell was so mad that he docked the Patriots another first round pick.

I would not be surprised if Goodell didn't even have any actual evidence of tampering, but still made the ruling based on perception: "It looks like you did something, and it's a bad look for the league."

He's done this before with Will Smith, Jim Tressel & Deshaun Watson.

Which they would've used on two defensive ends with a history of injuries and a tackle they convert to guard. Combined time on an active NFL roster under ten years.

everyone does it already and the league knows they do.

Kirk was just dumb enough to admit it to the press so they had to do something.

Translation of ruling in layman's terms: Try not to do it again.
