It's easier playing for a select title now that they don't have to compete against the public school baseball recruiters

So if the coach is plugged in to the local leagues, he knows which kids to "encourage them to move into his district".
if only it were that easy... You really have only Barbe, Sulphur, and Sam Houston in terms of good baseball, as opposed to places like NOLA where top players can end up at 30 different schools

actually more schools per capita of students in other LA cities than in Nola... so.. that's a tired old false argument

I played against barbe in a tourney when cecchinis sons were probably 4 years old ish, 20 or so years ago.

Before the game, ceccinis wife had the sons in the batting cage hitting against a pitching machine.

It was the most unbelievable thing I’ve ever seen.

These kids, who were literally 4 years old, were absolutey crushing the ball against a pitching machine throwing probably 70.

Was pretty crazy how good they were at such a young age.

A lot of these high school coaches are supportive of travel teams with kids in their own school district. My son plays on a 12 year old team with kids only in his school district. Personally I think this is the way to go.

I agree. I remember playing in a tournament in Sulphur. We played a team from St. Amant, Opelousas Catholic, and maybe Rayne? Anyways that was what I loved about USSSA back in the day. You saw where these schools were from. It was cool to go to state and beat teams like Acadiana, Denham, etc.

At the 14u level there are several teams that are de facto school ball teams. ED White and Catholic NI, off the top of my head, both have their rising 9th grade teams all playing together.

Can't argue with his results.

Time to flex: I struck out Austin Nagle on 3 straight pitches at Barbe's field in 2001 in our district game. I should've just retired right then & there.

Time to cry: Final district game of 2001 at our yard is vs. Barbe, I came in to close the game. Nagle had hit a ball all the way back to LC off of 1 of our junior pitchers & did his cocky bat flip then walked to 1B before jogging the rest of the way. His next AB, my coach sends in the old upside down bird signal. It was my senior day game; had my whole family there & everyone in the stands knew what was coming. My fricking mom stands up & calls my coach out for it. Legit stopped everything going on. I stepped off the rubber, gave her a look of complete embarassment, & tried to compose myself. My 1B & SS come in to calm me down & basically say "you know if you don't plunk him, you're just as dead if you do, right? So you might as well plunk him...".
I was pretty worried about what my coach would do if I didn't, but I was far more scared of my mother. I was so freaking shook, I nailed him in his thigh. After the game, we talked in the handshake line & he said "you had no choice. All good."

Even WORSE was 2 in the top of the 7th ab inning later, I give up an 0-2 count DEAD CENTER FIELD homerun to Justin Vincent, who was freaking PINCH HITTING. That SOB stepped on the plate (but he will NEVER admit it) on an OUTSIDE fastball that was in the middle of the other batters box & somehow tattooed it. He will never let me forget that either. The only HR I ever gave up in HS & youth.

Guys that are planning to go to the same school are accelerating their development by staying together. They don’t have to learn chemistry. Plus... if they learn the style the high school plays..... they have a better chance of stepping in right away.

I'm not sure baseball lends itself to that like other sports... I can't think of many different styles a baseball team would have that override who their pitcher is. It is still mainly an individual sport.

I disagree. I know LBA down in Houma has a lot of Houma Christian kids. Their philosophy is similar once they get to high school. Gavin Dugas came out of that system.

Before travel ball, go back and look at those South LC little league teams between the late 80s until the 2000s. They dominated and won state and were in the regionals and LLWS more than any other team in the southern US. They had some studs. It was a big deal, from the community getting behind it to sponsors, etc. I played for South LC in the 90s and we had 5 guys that played in college, off one little league team!

Even Mid City had some studs.
