Gallup: Football still America’s favorite sport, but losing young fans

That was nearly a reversal of what Gallup had found in the previous time it asked that question, 12 years earlier. At that time, 34% named baseball and 21% football.
Similarly, in a survey conducted last month, football remains Americans’ favorite sport to watch, by a wide margin, although the 31% who name it as their favorite is the lowest in a generation.
Although football has topped the list the past 54 years across 23 separate measurements, younger adults’ lesser affinity for the sport helps explain why fewer Americans overall are choosing it as their favorite sport, according to the report. Just 20% of adults aged 18 to 34 identify football as their preferred sport to watch, compared with 30% of those aged 35 to 54 and 38% of those aged 55 and older.
Basketball remains America’s second-most favorite (11%), although its numbers have dropped since its high of 17% in a 1997 poll, when Michael Jordan’s Bulls were the sport’s dominant team.
Meanwhile, 9% of Americans identify soccer as their favorite sport, the highest Gallup has measured by two percentage points. Soccer now is nearly on par with basketball and baseball (10%).

Can't beat the fact that a game is completed within 2 hours, it doesn't wreck an entire afternoon like a 5 hour SEC game.

Not my 19 and 17 year old boys...they hate soccer and love football.

One of reasons why my kids will pick soccer over any other sport to watch every time unless it’s their favorite team.

Count me in the soccer camp after growing up with football being my favorite. Watching soccer without commercials or timeouts ruined me on other sports

My experience working in schools suggests most kids don’t give a shite about sports at all. I used to be able to talk sports, but they don’t know shite about what’s going on these days.

The Big 12 literally has the monster logo wherever you see it now. Football is going to look a lot like soccer in 20 years when it comes to advertisements.
Hopefully, soccer doesn't look like football when it comes to commercials. Although, based on the water breaks in the World Cup, there's an opening for it.

When most of the US broadcasts of the World Cup were on, there wasn't much else in the way of sports on TV.
Maybe if you streamed something from somewhere, you had an option. But that doesn't make much in the way of viewers in seats to push advertisers' numbers.

The Super Bowl could’ve been on, and I still would have watched this World Cup instead. It was absolutely awesome.

I don’t know why this is a big mystery. There’s 10 billion things to do that didn’t exist 20 years ago. Not necessarily because people hate football. It’s just because they’re busy doing other shite.

We need to bring back NFL Starter jackets, instead of the black hoodies that all high school students wear now.
